Set at 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) on Churchill Downs’ dirt track, this race is open to 2-year-olds and it is run on opening day at the Churchill Downs Fall Meet. The race is named for Iroquois, the first American horse to win the Epsom Derby in England. The race historically is the first points race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Winners of the race include Ide, Harlan's Holiday, Champali, The Cliffs's Edge, Astrology, Canadian Horse of the Year Uncaptured, and Not This Time.
