Spice Runner won his maiden race at first asking in his career debut on May 23, 2025, going five furlongs at Churchill Downs. He then tried his hand at various 2-year-old stakes races in Kentucky, first with a fifth-place finish in the $194,000 Bashford Manor Stakes going six furlongs at Churchill Downs on June 29 and then with a second-place finish in the $200,000 Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes going seven furlongs on Aug. 10 when he lost to Comport by two lengths.
Spice Runner won his maiden race at first asking in his career debut on May 23, 2025, going five furlongs at Churchill Downs. He then tried his hand at various 2-year-old stakes races in Kentucky, first with a fifth-place finish in the $194,000 Bashford Manor Stakes going six furlongs at Churchill Downs on June 29 and then with a second-place finish in the $200,000 Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes going seven furlongs on Aug. 10 when he lost to Comport by two lengths. Spice Runner got his breakthrough in his following start when he got revenge on Comport, rallying from off-the-pace to catch him by a head to win the Grade 3 $300,000 Iroquois Stakes going one-mile back at Churchill Downs on Sept. 13. The Iroquois was the first official points race on the Road to the 2026 Kentucky Derby.
He made his next start in the $650,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity Oct. 4 at Keeneland, a qualifying race for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by TAA and a points race for the 2026 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Spice Runner stumbled badly at the start and finished a nonthreatening fifth.
Spice Runner is trained by Steve Asmussen. He is a Winchell Thoroughbreds homebred full brother to the multiple Grade 1-winning sprinter Gunite by the sire Gun Runner.
