Spending most of his early career in stakes races, Lucky Player had the distinction of the first horse to win a Kentucky Derby trail race for the 2015 season. Lucky Player won his maiden on debut at Churchull Downs in late May but could only mnage a fourth place finish over the track in the Bashford Manor. He managed a second in his next stakes race but finally scored again in the Grade 3 Iroquois.
