History

The Breeders' Futurity Stakes is a 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds on the main track at Keeneland Race Course. The race was first held in 1910 and has been held annually since 1938. The winner earns a spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile starting gate and the top four finishers earn points toward the 2015 Kentucky Derby.

The Breeders' Futurity is currently sponsored by Claiborne Farm, which has won the race five times as an owner. Several champions have won the race, including Round Table, Swale, Forty Niner, Boston Harbor and Favorite Trick. Other top horses to have captured the race include Tejano Run, Honour and Glory, Cat Thief, Captain Steve and Dullahan.

The speed record at the current distance of the race is held by Polar Expedition, who won the Breeders' Futurity in 1:42.20 in 1993. The 10-length margin of victory recorded by Gold Stage in 1979 is also a record. Jockey Don Brumfeld and trainer D. Wayne Lukas have tallied a record five and six wins apiece in the race, respectively.
