A top early season target for routers and milers 4 years and older, the Metropolitan Handicap was first run in 1891 and is held at New York’s Belmont Park. The one mile (eight furlongs) race on the dirt was first run at Morris Park but has mostly been held at Belmont Park since 1904. Devil Diver leads all horses with three wins in the race but five other horses have won the race twice. Jockey John Velazquez leads all jockeys with give wins while John Gaver, Sr. leads all trainers with six wins. Some of the best horses in American racing have won the Met Mile with Holy Bull, Langfuhr, Ghostzapper, Shackleford and Palace Malice just some of the horses to win it since 1990.
