History

This 1 1/4-mile turf race is named for Hall of Fame trainer Charlie Whittingham. The race originally was run in 1969 as the Hollywood Invitational Handicap but was renamed in 1999 to honor the standout Southern California trainer of Legends such as Ferdinand, Flawlessly, and Sunday Silence. When Hollywood Park closed in 2014, the race was moved to Santa Anita Park.

Through the years, this race has been won by a host of standouts such as Fort Marcy (1969), Cougar II (1971), Dahlia (1976), Exceller (1978), John Henry (1980, 1981, 1984), Great Communicator (1989), Steinlen (1990), Bien Bien (1993), Storming Home (2003), Lava Man (2006), After Market (2007), and Acclamation (2010, 2011, 2012).
