Atitlan

Atitlan won his maiden race in his second lifetime start in a Del Mar maiden race on July 20, 2024. From there he tried stakes competition and finished third in the La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 4 and then finished third again in the Grade 2 Caesars Sportsbook Del Mar Derby on Sept. 1.

Atitlan earned his first stakes win when victorious in the Grade 2 $200,000 Twilight Derby going 1 1/8 miles at Santa Anita on Oct. 26. Sent off as the 6-1 third choice in a field of seven in the Twilight Derby, Atitlan stalked the pace in the early going, moved up a bit on the backstretch, raced behind horses down inside on the turn and blasted to the lead once in the clear at the top of the stretch. Atitlan ran home strongly and won by two lengths in a time of 1:49.12 for the 1 1/8 miles.

Atitlan was back in the winner's circle again in 2025 when he took the Grade 3 $100,000 San Luis Rey Stakes going 1 1/2 miles on the turf at Santa Anita on March 22. He closed from near the rear of an eight-horse field to get up to win by two lengths. He then scored yet another victory going 1 1/4 miles on the turf with a win in the Grade 2 $200,000 Charles Whittingham Stakes on May 3 at Santa Anita.

Atitlan is trained by John Shirreffs. He was bred in Kentucky by the sire The Factor out of the mare Armanda by Acatenango.
