Beginner’s Guide to the 2025 Breeders’ Cup World Championships
Banking on a 15-1 Longshot in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies
Gambling
Friday’s $2 million NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar shapes up to be a wide-open affair, with accomplished fillies entered from California, New York, and Kentucky.
Five of the nine starters have been competing, often against one another, at Del Mar and Santa Anita Park. That group is led by a pair of Bob Baffert trainees in #2 Bottle of Rouge, winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes, and #7 Explora, runner-up in the Del Mar Debutante and subsequent winner of the Grade 2 Oak Leaf Stakes Presented by Oak Tree Racing Association.

The 1-2 finishers in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland are also present in #5 Tommy Jo and #4 Percy’s Bar. Percy’s Bar actually crossed the finish line first in the Alcibiades but was disqualified and placed second for bumping Tommy Jo in the stretch and knocking her off stride. New York is represented by undefeated #1 Iron Orchard, a state-bred Authentic filly who rallied late to take the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes by a nose at Belmont at the Big A, improving to 3-for-3.
As my colleague Mike Curry is known to point out, analyzing 2-year-old filly races can be a challenge. These youngsters often make significant and hard-to-predict improvements, especially during the waning months of their juvenile campaigns. Which one of these fillies is ready to reach an early career peak Oct. 31 at Del Mar?
Truthfully, I would not be surprised to see any of these nine fillies win the race, but for my top selection I’m going with #8 Super Corredora, who is listed at an appealing 15-1 odds on the morning line. This Gun Runner filly trained by John Sadler fits the profile of what I’m looking for in a longshot. She’s raced three times, finishing fifth behind Juvenile Fillies entrant #9 La Wally in her debut sprinting at Del Mar back in July, and then checking in second to Bottle of Rouge in an August 6 ½-furlong sprint, also at Del Mar (one race before Bottle of Rouge won the Del Mar Debutante).
Next, in her first two-turn race, Super Corredora overcame mild early jostling in the first turn of a one-mile maiden event at Santa Anita on Oct. 11 to take a short lead on the backstretch, put away the pace presser, and then power clear to a 8 ¼-length romp, relishing every bit of the extended distance. Her speed figures have risen in all three races on both Beyer and Equibase calculations, and she followed up her Santa Anita win with a swift four-furlong workout at the track Oct. 24. Sign me up!
Limited to a bankroll of $30, my betting strategy for this race is to wager $18 to win on Super Corredora hoping that her post-time odds don’t drop too much from 15-1. I’ll then key the filly in a $2 exacta over Explora (5-2 morning-line favorite), Percy’s Bar (9-2), and maiden winner #3 Meaning (15-1), totaling $6. Meaning will be making her second career start in the Juvenile Fillies after winning a 6 ½-furlong maiden race in late September at Los Alamitos by 3 ½ lengths. This is another Gun Runner filly, out of an Into Mischief mare, and might just be ready to surprise when making a big class leap.
With my remaining $6, I’ll flip the exacta positions, putting Super Corredora second.
