Wuheida Encabeza Nutrido Grupo en el Elizabeth II

Turf racing at Keeneland. (Eclipse Sportswire)

The 34th running of Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes Presented by Lane’s End at Keeneland attracted a talented field of 11 3-year-old filly turf runners, eight of which have won Grade or Group 1 or 2 stakes. Leading the field for the 1 1/8-mile race is the European import Wuheida (NOTE: Wuheida was scratched from the race on Friday), who is winless in four starts this year and who won the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac last fall in France. A quartet of fillies comes out of the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks Presented by the Jockey Club, led by Oaks winner Dream Dancing, who beat Beau Recall by a nose with Madame Dancealot another neck back in third. Con Te Partiro finished fourth in the Oaks and won the Sandringham Handicap in England prior to that. Another filly coming off a win in a big race is Proctor's Ledge, victorious in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes in August at Saratoga. Daddys Lil Darling won the Dueling Grounds Oaks at Kentucky Downs one month ago and appears to fit with this group, as do the one-two finishers in the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes at Saratoga last month – Uni and La Coronel, the latter a perfect two-for-two at Keeneland. New Money Honey won the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational in July before a poor effort when trying dirt for the first time in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, so she could bounce back to top form. Unforgetable Filly is also hoping to return to the form shown winning the Group 2 German 1,000 Guineas in June after which she finished 13th in a Group 3 stakes in Great Britain.

Wuheida has run six times in her career, winning twice and finishing no worse than fourth in any of her races against some of the best female turf stars in Europe, if not the world. In her second career start last October, Wuheida won the important Prix Marcel Boussac for 2-year-olds on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe undercard. Returning for her 3-year-old campaign this past July after nine months off and running brilliantly against older fillies and mares, Wuheida finished second to Roly Poly in the Falmouth Stakes. After a third-place finish in the German Oaks (Preis der Diana), Wuheida again took on older horses, including the rock-solid Hydrangea, and was fourth in the Matron Stakes before again facing her elders just 13 days ago and finishing a head and two necks from Rhododendron and Hydrangea in the Prix de l'Opera on this year's Arc undercard. In the Prix de l'Opera, Wuheida earned a 122 Equibase Speed Figure, which is the best figure any horse in the Queen Elizabeth II field has ever earned. In addition, jockey William Buick, who rode Wuheida in the Prix Marcel Boussac, comes in from Europe to ride, which is a very good sign the filly will run her best. Rhododendron, Hydrangea and Roly Poly have won 13 races between them, including multiple Group 1 events, and any of them would be the odds-on favorite in this field – so Wuheida appears to be a standout on class even among this group.

Dream Dancing (Eclipse Sportswire)

Dream Dancing may be the best among the U.S.-based contingent, even if it may be by a narrow margin. She enters the race having beaten three other entrants in the Del Mar Oaks this summer in California. Dream Dancing rallied from 10th of 12 in the Oaks and was ninth with a quarter of a mile to go. She inhaled the field with a seventh-to-first run in the last eighth of the race under Keeneland leading jockey Julien Leparoux, who rides her once again. The 111 Equibase figure she earned is the best last-race figure by any horse in the QEII field based in the U.S., and if Leparoux can get his filly outside of the rest when they turn for home as he did in the Oaks, Dream Dancing will be seen passing many if not all of these in the late stages.

Madam Dancealot and Beau Recall are both owned by Slam Dunk Racing but have different trainers and will race uncoupled in the wagering, so there could be value on one or both. Madame Dancealot won the San Clemente Stakes in July at Del Mar with a 111 figure, which she duplicated with a fast finish from 12th to be beaten a nose and a neck when third in the Del Mar Oaks. Beau Recall earned the same 111 figure when rallying from eighth to second in the Oaks. In a full field like this one on the grass, both fillies and their top jockeys, Jamie Theriot aboard Madame Dancealot and Joe Talamo aboard Beau Recall, could easily have a big impact.

The rest of the field, with their best representative Equibase Speed Figures, is Con Te Partiro (108), Daddy's Lil Darling (106), La Coronel (104), New Money Honey (109), Proctor's Ledge (109), Uni (108), and Unforgetable Filly (107).

Dream Dancing (Eclipse Sportswire)
