The Grade 1, $2 million Cygames Breeders’ Cup Sprint will be contested at six furlongs on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland, and the 2026 edition has attracted a high-powered, 13-horse field. The Sprint will go as Race 8 on Saturday’s 12-race Breeders’ Cup program at Keeneland. Who will prove to be the fastest of the fast? Below is an at a glance overview of the contenders for the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

BREEDERS’ CUP SPRINT

Racetrack: Keeneland Race Course, Lexington, Ky.

Date: Oct. 31

Purse: $2 million

Distance: 6 furlongs, dirt

Race: 8

Post Time: 3:42 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Elite Power (2022, 2023), Whitmore (2020), Mitole (2019), Roy H (2017, 2018), Runhappy (2015), Midnight Lute (2007, 2008), Silver Train (2005), Speightstown (2004), Kona Gold (2000), Safely Kept (1990), Dancing Spree (1989), and Gulch (1988)

First held: 1984

1. Mad House (30-1 morning-line odds): Held his own last time in the Grade 2 Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix Stakes in the course and distance prep race for this year’s Sprint but still came up short against a couple of these same contenders. Much of his success, including both of his graded stakes wins, has come with Paco Lopez in the saddle so the switch back to Lopez is a positive factor for a horse that will offer value at 30-1 on the morning line. He owns high speed from the rail, always a dangerous combination, but there is other speed entered in this field and he’ll have to do a lot better than in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Sprint when he finished last in a 14-horse field at odds greater than 30-1.

2. Dark Saffron (20-1): He has made 14 of his 15 career starts at Meydan Racecourse while racing exclusively in Dubai, where his form has been hit or miss. Notably, he does show up for the big days, however, with back-to-back wins in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen, in which he defeated Nakatomi in 2025 and defending Breeders’ Cup Sprint champ Bentornato in 2026. Nevertheless, major question marks still surround this horse, who must prove he can be competitive at the top level away from his home track and must do so without a prep race coming off a seven-month layoff.

JOCKEY: Connor Beasley; TRAINER: Amhad bin Harmash

3. Liam Smith (20-1): Rarely do you see a recent claim pay dividends this big and this quickly. Liam Smith was claimed for $50,000 by trainer Peter Miller for co-owner Altamira Racing Stable just two races ago when he crushed the field at Del Mar by 12 lengths with a 107 Beyer Speed Figure. He repeated the 107 figure last time when winning a Santa Anita Park allowance-optional claiming race by 5 ½ lengths. He will step up significantly in class here for his first-ever appearance at the stakes level but could be the real deal, especially if you subscribe to the accuracy of Beyer figures, which place him above every horse in this field except for Englishman and T O Elvis. New York’s leading rider Manny Franco picks up the live mount.

4. Hymn (15-1): Has been in exceptionally good form with wins in four of his last five races and must be respected coming off a Grade 1 win at Saratoga Race Course in the Forego Stakes, in which he beat next-out Grade 3 Vosburgh Stakes winner T Kraft. All of his good races, however, have not given him a speed figure near the range he would need to compete with Englishman. He faced Built two races ago in Saratoga’s Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes but came up short to that rival by 2 ½ lengths. He’ll sit right off the pace in the second tier and hope to get the jump on the closers if there is a pace meltdown.

5. Listenupshance (12-1): Earned back-to-back high-profile Southern California sprint victories in the second half of this year, including the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar and the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Presented by Estrella Jalisco last time, which was the same prep race used by Straight No Chaser two years ago on his way to a win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He doesn’t show a big speed figure for that most recent win because he was hindered by a bad start, but with a better break he’s definitely good enough to make a dent in this race. Sprint favorites Englishman and T O Elvis have both earned their big wins this year at seven furlongs, but Listenupshance has proved a legitimate six-furlong specialist this season and that will make him dangerous based on his best effort.

6. American Stage (30-1): International traveler has made starts this year in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Japan, and Korea, where he most recently finished second in a million-dollar 16-horse race. He’s mostly been competitive, but the main thing missing from his past performances are wins. He has gone winless in all of 2025 and so far in 2026.

JOCKEY: Oisin Murphy; TRAINER: Yoshito Yahagi

7. Built (10-1): Putting together a marvelous year with five wins since being converted from longer races into a sprinter starting at the end of 2025. Comes into this race with competitive speed figures and two stakes wins in a row coming in Saratoga’s Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes, in which he beat Hymn, and in the $300,000 Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes last time at Churchill Downs. He has ideal tactical speed to place him right behind the leaders and has done enough this year to be considered a legitimate contender, at least for a spot in the money.

JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Wayne Catalano

8. Little Thunder (30-1): He advances to his spot based on his runner-up finish last time out in the Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland, where he lost to Nakatomi and edged Mad House by a nose for second. Even based on that career-best effort, however, Little Thunder has never run a race fast enough to compete against the top horses in this field and a competitive finish in this spot will be a tough assignment.

9. Nakatomi (12-1): Late-running sprinter races back in the field and tries to make one late run hoping to catch the tiring front-runners. Nakatomi has used that strategy and running style to his advantage to put together a very productive career that includes a third-place finish in the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, plus back-to-back wins in the Phoenix Stakes that stand tall amongst his five lifetime wins at this track. Therein lies his chance in this race, just as it does in every one of his outings. He will come with his strong late kick and can make a dent if the speed horses all wipe each other out on a fast pace.

JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Wesley Ward

10. Roll On Big Joe (30-1): Raced three times this year and earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure each time when facing mostly second- or third-rung sprint competition at races at Oaklawn Park and Churchill Downs. You must admire his consistency as he has not finished out of the exacta in any of his five most recent starts, including three ungraded stakes wins, and few horses can match his record of 18 exacta finishes in his 25 career starts. He’ll face by far the toughest test of his career against this field, however, and in this spot would have to be considered a longshot to finish in the money.

JOCKEY: Julien Leparoux; TRAINER: Robert Hess Jr.

11. T O Elvis (7-2): Surely was no secret in Japan, but he seemingly came from out of nowhere to burst onto the scene for American racing fans with his monstrous 3 ¼-length win in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes Presented by Ford with a 108 Beyer Speed Figure going seven furlongs on the Kentucky Derby undercard in what has been his only start of this year so far. The long layoff seems to matter less in the Sprint than in other Breeders’ Cup races. Case in point, Bentornato won last year’s Sprint after only a two-race campaign and no preps after June 6. T O Elvis showed impressive acceleration when he stalked mid-pack and blasted past the leaders this spring in an effort that makes you believe the sky is the limit. If any horse in this field is going be able to challenge Englishman for the win, it’s him.

JOCKEY: Ryusei Sakai; TRAINER: Daisuke Takayanagi

12. Stradale (20-1): Has proved a versatile high-level sprinter this season with back-to-back graded stakes wins in August and September on both the turf (Saratoga’s Grade 3 Mahony Stakes) and the dirt (Grade 2 Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx Racing). His victory in the Gallant Bob was flattered when runner-up Dr. Kapur came back to win his next start in Keeneland’s Perryville Stakes. Stradale boasts top human connections in his corner with Flavien Prat aboard for Steve Asmussen, but a win in his spot may prove to be a tall order for Stradale, who faced Englishman back in June in Saratoga’s Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun and lost to him by 20 lengths.

13. Englishman (4-5): Three-year-old quickly developed into the country’s most fearsome sprinter in 2026 with back-to-back devastating wins at Saratoga in the Woody Stephens Stakes and the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes, both at seven furlongs. His 115 and 117 Beyer Speed Figures in those most recent races are enough to make him a huge favorite to win the Sprint, but he’s not without his question marks. This will be his first-ever time facing older horses, he will be cutting back in distance from seven furlongs to six, and he will have to compete with and outrun the other horses with blazing early speed entered in this field. Bettors will have to decide whether or not to overlook his potential flaws as a probable odds-on favorite, but those who watched him win this year are unlikely to be deterred by a low price on the tote board, and will run, not walk, to the mutuel teller to get a bet down on him to win.
