A Day in the Life of a Kentucky Derby Horse
Turf racing and a hurricane are a bad mix, so it’s not much of a surprise that the Beverly D. Stakes, a $500,000 turf test for fillies and mares at Colonial Downs, has been moved to Sunday due to the prospect of sustained heavy rain.
The Beverly D., a “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series race for the Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, was originally scheduled for Saturday at the New Kent, Va., racetrack. Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate and the one-day delay will enable the race to go off without a hitch.
1. Libban (7-2, morning-line odds): Has nice early speed and put it to fine use last time to win a Lone Star Park turf stakes. Will be helped by breaking from the rail, but has yet to race on wet turf – which can come into play here.
JOCKEY: Edgard Zayas; TRAINER: Saffie Joseph Jr.
2. Nadette (8-1): Was bred in France and won three races there so the track condition should not be a hinderance – as evidenced by a 4 3/4-length victory in a prep race for this on soft turf at Colonial last month. She has a nice late kick and should relish the distance. Seems a major player.
JOCKEY: Hector Berrios; TRAINER: Neil Drysdale
3. Neecie Marie (10-1): Disappointed in the Diana Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, finishing 10th while racing wide. Before that, she was second in the Grade 1 New York Stakes Presented by Rivers Casino and second in the Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes. Gets Frankie Dettori and can be force here if the last try was just a glitch.
JOCKEY: Frankie Dettori; TRAINER: Butch Reid
4. Fev Rover (2-1): She won last year’s Beverly D. in a romp on firm turf. Didn’t fire in her 2024 debut in the New York Stakes then was a troubled second in the Grade 2 Nassau Stakes at Woodbine. A multiple Grade 1 winner, she seems poised for a big effort in her third start of the year
JOCKEY: Javier Castellano; TRAINER: Mark Casse
5. Mission of Joy (6-1): Didn’t have much of an impact on the Diana Stakes when she finished sixth but closed fast for third in the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes before that. Figures to be a late threat and could be helped by the added distance.
JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Graham Motion
6. Moira (9-5): She was second in the Diana Stakes and is the morning-line favorite here, but the big question is whether she will stay in Canada and run in Saturday’s Canadian Stakes Presented by the Japan Racing Association due to the prospect of dry turf or travel to Virginia. She’s a $1.5 million earner who has not been worse than third in her last seven starts with the most recent three coming in Grade 1 stakes. She will be tough to beat … if she runs.
JOCKEY: Jose Ortiz; TRAINER: Kevin Attard
THE PICK: Moira
LONGSHOT: Nadette
