Originally run as the Oaklawn Budweiser Breeders’ Cup Handicap in 1987, this race was renamed the Azeri Stakes in 2005. It is the local prep for Oaklawn’s Apple Blossom Stakes and is run at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt for fillies and mares 4-year-olds and up. A Grade 2 stakes race, the Azeri has been won by Grade 1 winners and champions such as Cuddles, Halo America, Sister Act, Heritage of Gold, Round Pond, India, Acoma, Havre de Grace, Tiz Miz Sue and Close Hatches. Five winners of this race have went on to win the Apple Blossom Stakes in the same year.
