A native of Oklahoma, Smith started training on his
own in 1991 and is a regular on the Oaklawn Park, Remington Park
and Prairie Meadows circuit. He shared the Oaklawn Park title with
Gary Hartlage in 1997 and was the outright winner in 1998 and 1999.
Smith is probably best-known on a national level as the trainer of
Silver Goblin, who won the 1995 Essex and Razorback Handicaps at
Oaklawn Park before finishing second to that year's Horse of the
Year, Cigar, in the Oaklawn Handicap. Among the other top runners
