First run in 1937, the San Diego Handicap is for horses three and older going 1 1/16 miles on dirt. The race is held at Del Mar and was part of its first ever card in 1937. That first race was won by Clean Out. Nearly 30 years later, Native Diver won the race three consecutive times from 1963 to 1965. Other winners include Wickerr, Bates Motel, Skywalter, Quiet American, Northern Afleet, Giacomo, Well Armed and Rail Trip.
