Run at six furlongs on dirt in its first running at Monmouth Park in 1980, the Pegasus was extended to 1 1/8 miles in 1981. In 1996, the race was run at 1 1/16 miles on turf but switched back to its normal distance on surface the following year. In 2010, the race was cut back to 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) where it remains today for 3-year-olds. Trainer Scotty Schulhofer has won the race four times to lead all trainers while jockeys Jose Santos and Edgar Prado are tied at the top of the jockey rankings with three each.
