First run in 1959, the Sheepshead Bay Stakes is run at Belmont Park for fillies and mares 4 years old and older. Run at various distances in its early history, the Sheepshead Bay has been run exclusively at 1 3/8 miles (11 furlongs) since 1980. Five horses have won the race twice with Mike Smith leading all jockeys with five wins and three trainers winning the race four times. Horses who have won the race include Cicada, The Very One, Sabin, Soaring Softly, Moscow Burning and Honey Ryder.
