Two talented 4-year-old fillies are the top betting choices in Saturday’s $2 million, Grade 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland.
#2 Nitrogen (6-5) is the slim favorite. She was voted champion 3-year-old filly of 2025 after winning five graded stakes, including the historic Alabama Stakes Presented by Keeneland Sales. She ended the season with a runner-up finish in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, and this year she’s been stronger than ever, dominating the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes Presented by Ford by 12 3/4 lengths and finishing second against a formidable field when facing males in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes.
#4 Fully Subscribed (8-5) is the second choice. Although she was no match for Nitrogen in the Ogden Phipps, finishing far back in a dead-heat for second place, she’s won three starts in a row since then, including the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes by 9 3/4 lengths and the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster Stakes by 3 1/4 lengths.
The large margin separating Nitrogen and Fully Subscribed in the Ogden Phipps might suggest Nitrogen is the more likely winner of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. But Fully Subscribed has clearly improved throughout 2026, and might there be reason to believe Nitrogen is beatable?
Early in Nitrogen’s career, she competed with success on grass. Since switching to dirt, many of her best races — including the Alabama, Ogden Phipps, and Whitney — have come at Saratoga. She hasn’t run quite as well at other tracks. In the Grade 2 Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park last month, she started as the overwhelming 1-20 favorite and did prevail, but only by a diminishing 2 3/4 lengths.
Nitrogen could also face a challenging pace setup in the Distaff. She’s done her best work racing on the lead, but she’ll face a number of talented pace rivals in the Distaff, including 2025 PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner #8 Splendora (9-2) and 2025 NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner #7 Super Corredora (15-1).
A fast pace could play to the strengths of Fully Subscribed. While Fully Subscribed does have some early speed, she rallied from midfield to win the Personal Ensign and shouldn’t mind settling behind a hot pace.
As a result, we recommend betting Fully Subscribed on top in the exacta (which requires selecting the top two finishers in order) and even the trifecta (select the top three finishers in order). Underneath, use Nitrogen, Splendora, and late-running #3 Regaled (20-1).
