The AGS Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational Stakes has been a fixture at Kentucky Downs since before the turn of the century, a 1 ½-mile grass race that now boosts a seven-figure purse and regularly draws elite turf runners from both the U.S. and abroad. The Turf Cup is a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

Kentucky Downs turf course has a unique, undulating pear-shaped design. Horses with previous success on the track have a distinct advantage — such as last year’s Kentucky Turf Cup winner and course-record holder Ole Crazy Bone — although turf courses like this are more common in Europe and international invaders also have enjoyed success at the venue. Several international runners join top U.S.-based turf horse Burnham Square and defending winner Ole Crazy Bone in a terrific 10-horse field.

1. Tiffany (9-2 morning-line odds): Elite European racemare has finished first or second in 15 of 18 career starts for top trainer Sir Mark Prescott. She enters off a neck win in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin at held at 1 ½ miles in Germany. She has earned two of her three group stakes wins at this distance. A major win threat.

2. Desvio (30-1): Five-year-old gelding has been defeated by 4 ¼ lengths or more in all three starts in 2026 and would need to regain his career-best form to be a factor in his first start at Kentucky Downs. There’s always a chance a U.S.-based runner might really take to the unique design of this turf course, but those with experience at the track seem to have an advantage.

3. Dresden Row (12-1): Another first-timer at Kentucky Downs, the ultra-consistent 5-year-old has never finished outside the top three in 19 career starts with eight wins to his credit. He’s been sharp this year with two wins in four starts and enters off a third-place finish, beaten by a half-length by Burnham Square, in the Grade 1 Arlington Million Stakes. Distance is a question as he stretches out to 1 ½ miles for the first time.

4. Eff Thirty Five (30-1): He’s 2-for-2 this year and makes his first start for the all-time winningest trainer at Kentucky Downs, Mike Maker. The Kentucky Turf Cup is a significant class test for Eff Thirty Five as it’s only his second try in a graded stakes and his first at that level on grass. A deep closer in top form, he could pass some fading rivals late for a minor award.

5. Layabout (20-1): Four-year-old gelding won his lone try at 1 ½ miles in January in the Grade 3 William L. McKnight Stakes Presented by Woodford Reserve Bourbon and most recently was beaten by less than a length when fourth in the Arlington Million. His lone previous start at Kentucky Downs was a hard-charging fourth from well off the pace in a $2 million stakes last September. That experience should serve him well. Worth a look for exacta and trifecta bets.

6. Ethical Diamond (3-1): Pulled off a stunning 27-1 upset in the 2025 Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. After a pair of unplaced finishes to start his 6-year-old season, Ethical Diamond most recently flashed his top form with a nose victory in a Group 3 race at this distance in Ireland. He’s 4-for-7 at 1 ½ miles and should be flying late.

7. Burnham Square (2-1): He has established himself as one of the best, if not the best, turf horses based in the United States with four straight wins against stakes competition entering the Kentucky Turf Cup. Burnham Square most recently won the Arlington Million, he’s 2-for-2 at 1 ½ miles, and he finished second by a head to a tough European invader on this turf course in last year’s DK Horse Nashville Derby in his lone start at Kentucky Downs. An obvious win contender.

8. Ole Crazy Bone (8-1): He ran the best race of his career last September at Kentucky Downs when he won this race by 3 ¾ lengths and set a new course record of 2:24.72 for 1 ½ miles. Maker has won more races at Kentucky Downs than any other trainer, so he’ll have him ready. This looks like a better group than he faced last year, but Old Crazy Bone’s tactical speed is a big asset as is jockey Jose Ortiz. A major factor at his best.

9. Echo Lane (30-1): Winless in six starts in 2026 with a trio of top-three finishes. He’s been a consistent turf runner for several years but it’s tough to look past zero wins in 11 previous tries against stakes competition and he was well-beaten in his last three races.

10. Fort George (9-2): A group stakes winner in Dubai in January, Fort George made a nice impression in his stateside debut when second by a nose to Ole Crazy Bone in the Grade 2 Bowling Green Stakes Presented by Emerald Ecovations July 11 at Saratoga. He might be somewhat overlooked, but he’s faced good competition and held his own this year. Big shot for a top-three finish.
