America’s Best Racing editor Patrick Reed presents key takeaways from a global Saturday in Thoroughbred racing, highlighted by two 200-point Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve prep races in Arkansas and Florida and a star-studded Dubai World Cup Carnival card in the United Arab Emirates.

New Number One?

Just hours after news broke that Paladin would miss the Triple Crown and not return to racing until fall at the earliest, both Commandment and Renegade authored performances worthy of taking Paladin’s spot atop the Kentucky Derby contender rankings, including the NTRA poll and Byron King’s Derby Dozen. Commandment’s gritty nose decision over The Puma in the Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa was followed shortly by Renegade’s stretch-running blowout win in the Arkansas Derby, both results creating significant social media buzz.

Each winner has a strong case to make for Kentucky Derby favoritism, barring any breakthrough in the April 4 trio of 200-point preps. Commandment looked to be defeated at the top of the Gulfstream Park stretch after trailing the field through slow fractions, but he unleashed a sustained run to just nip The Puma, with third-place Chief Wallabee stuck between those two and battling as well. His win inarguably came against tougher competition. Renegade also was far back early in the Arkansas Derby, but he finished like a locomotive at Oaklawn to win going away over the classy Silent Tactic. The colts Blackout Time and Litmus Test, though solidly supported by bettors, were not factors at all in the Arkansas Derby.

It says here that Renegade gets the slight edge as probable morning-line favorite heading into the May 2 Kentucky Derby, although it’s worth noting that Commandment already has a win at Churchill Downs from last fall. Paladin will be missed, but the Derby march goes on …

No Shame in Second

With their wins Saturday, Commandment and Renegade move into first and second, respectively, on Churchill Downs’ Road to the Kentucky Derby points leaderboard with 150 and 125 points, respectively. The runners-up in the Florida Derby and Arkansas Derby are also safely in the May 2 field, as The Puma has accrued 106 points and Silent Tactic an even 100. Both colts ran well in defeat Saturday. Doubts about The Puma’s ability to fire another top effort just three weeks after his hard-fought win in the ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby were silenced – now the question is, can he handle an extra eighth of a mile in the Kentucky Derby?

Silent Tactic answered the call in all four of Oaklawn Park’s Kentucky Derby points races, finishing with one win (Southwest Stakes) and three seconds, and he was two lengths clear of the third-place finisher in the Arkansas Derby. A Mark Casse trainee, Silent Tactic has an excellent chance to pick up another fat check on the first Saturday in May.

Consider the Magnitude

Could we be witnessing Gun Runner 2.0? Winchell ThoroughbredsMagnitude first turned heads 13 months ago when he posted a 43.20-1 upset in the Fasig-Tipton Risen Star Stakes on the 2025 Kentucky Derby road. He missed the Triple Crown due to an ankle chip and gradually worked his way back into top form. Now, like Gun Runner did back in 2016-’17 for the same connections, Magnitude appears to have reached another level at age 4, as evidenced by his front-running, one-length victory over international superstar Forever Young Saturday in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airlines. That’s his third win in a row heading into big summer races in the older male division such as the Stephen Foster and Whitney Stakes. Racing fans can only hope the progression continues under Steve Asmussen’s guidance – and that Forever Young remains in training long enough to set up a possible rematch in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 31 at Keeneland.

Japan’s Jet Set

Saturday’s United Arab Emirates Derby Sponsored by Jumeirah was won by a Japan-bred and -based runner for the fifth year in a row, as Wonder Dean wore down front-runner Six Speed in the final furlong to prevail by 2 ½ lengths. The colt’s connections told reporters after Wonder Dean’s win that he would ship to Louisville for a start in the Kentucky Derby, which he easily qualified for having amassed 106 points through Churchill Downs’ Euro/Mideast Road to the Kentucky Derby series of prep races.

Meanwhile, in Wonder Dean’s home country, Danon Bourbon won the Fukuryu Stakes over Don Erectus, giving both colts 40 points on the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby series that grants one runner a spot in the Derby starting gate. Danon Bourbon, a Kentucky-bred son of Maxfield, has the reservation based on Churchill Downs’ latest leaderboard as Don Erectus is not nominated to the Triple Crown and his connections told Churchill’s racing liaison Kate Hunter that he would not be shipped to Louisville, according to a BloodHorse report. Neither one of these contenders gives off Forever Young vibes at this point, but there’s no discounting how prominent Japanese horses have been on the international stage this decade, even in dirt races, and Wonder Dean and Danon Bourbon should not be overlooked if they make it to the Derby.
