Six weeks ago, a star-studded field competed in the Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs, a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic that was hyped as “the” race for older horses through the first half of 2026. The June 27 Foster lived up to its billing, and now four standouts from that race plus a fantastic filly are back for a new “the” race of the year for older runners, Saturday’s Whitney Stakes at Saratoga.

Magnitude, Baeza, Sovereignty, and White Abarrio, the top four Foster finishers, join $2.7 million earner Nitrogen in a race that will have a lasting impact on both the older male and older female divisions heading into the late summer and fall.

The $1 million, Grade 1 Whitney is also a “Win and You’re In” prep for the Oct. 31 Longines Classic at Keeneland, which Magnitude has already qualified for via his Foster win and his score in the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline in March.

Since its inaugural running in 1928, the Whitney has been won by a roster of horses that has significant crossover with inductees in the Racing Hall of Fame. Nitrogen, champion 3-year-old filly of 2025, will attempt to become the seventh female winner of the Whitney, joining luminaries including the race’s inaugural winner Black Maria, Lady’s Secret, and Personal Ensign.

The Whitney Stakes anchors a sensational Saturday racecard at Saratoga and will be televised nationwide on FOX with a scheduled post time of 6:33 p.m. ET. America’s Best Racing will be on-site Saturday at Saratoga for a 2 ½-hour livestream presented with NYRA Bets from 4:30 p.m.-7 p.m. ET providing handicapping analysis, lifestyle features, and much more. “Whitney Day LIVE!” is hosted by ABR’s Alexa Zepp along with Jackson Muniz, Ren Carothers, Matthew DeSantis, and Kaylie Shapiro. Analysis: Magnitude solidified his status as the top older male dirt horse in training with a 1 ¼-length win in the Stephen Foster, which followed his equally impressive win over Japan’s superstar Forever Young in the Dubai World Cup. He earned a career-best 116 Equibase Speed Figure in the Foster, which he won after breaking through the starting gate and having to be reloaded. Despite the level of competition in the Foster and World Cup, Magnitude used his high cruising speed to secure early leads and finish both races with plenty of stamina in reserve. He might not have as easy a time on the front end Saturday, however, as Nitrogen figures to provide early pace pressure breaking right to his outside and Forged Steel could also show early speed. Even so, this colt has come a long way since his first Saratoga appearance – defeated 20 ¾ lengths by Sovereignty in the 2025 DraftKings Travers Stakes – and he is a main win threat in the Whitney, especially if pace pressure does not materialize and he runs freely on the lead. Should he prevail, comparisons between Magnitude and Steve Asmussen-trained Gun Runner, who won the 2017 Whitney as part of a Horse of the Year campaign and Hall of Fame career, will intensify.

Analysis: Nitrogen shook off a disappointing two-race stretch during spring 2026 when she returned to Saratoga and absolutely dominated fillies and mares in the June 5 Ogden Phipps Stakes Presented by Ford, setting the early pace and surging in the stretch to win by 12 ¾ lengths. That boosted her career record on dirt at Saratoga to 3-for-3, and she’s been training steadily at the Spa for Mark Casse over the past two months. In all three Saratoga stakes wins, Nitrogen has either set the pace or pressed the early leader, and there’s no reason to expect a different strategy in the Whitney, as the projected front-runner, Magnitude, is drawn just to her inside in the starting gate. It’s important to note that jockey Jose Ortiz, who has ridden Nitrogen for 14 consecutive starts, will be aboard Magnitude in the Whitney, while Hall of Famer John Velazquez takes the assignment Saturday. This filly started her career on turf and was successful, but she’s elevated her game after moving to dirt, and a win in the Whitney would go a long way toward securing her another Eclipse Award at year’s end. If Nitrogen prevails, she’ll become the first female racehorse to win the Whitney since Personal Ensign in 1988.

Analysis: This 5-year-old has shown flashes of elite ability in his career, topped by a 1 ½-length win over defending Breeders’ Cup Classic victor Sierra Leone in last year’s Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes on Saratoga’s dirt track. That race was marred by an early spill that affected several horses, however, and overall, Antiquarian has been far too inconsistent to make much of an impression in the older dirt male division over the past couple of years. He comes into this race off of back-to-back fourth-place finishes in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile) in June and the Suburban Stakes Presented by Subourbon Life held at 1 ¼ miles in early July, both at Saratoga. He was defeated by a combined 17 ¼ lengths in those races, although it’s worth noting that he did stumble at the start of the Suburban Stakes, which kept him farther back than usual in the field. Overall, even at his best Antiquarian hard-pressed to do more than possibly fill out the trifecta with a late run against this top-class group. Jockey Manny Franco gets aboard for the first time Saturday as John Velazquez, aboard in 11 of Antiquarian’s 13 prior starts, opts to ride Nitrogen.

4. Forged Steel (20-1)

Analysis: Forged Steel is a wild card in the Whitney, not pertaining so much to his win chances – which are remote – but rather to his role as a potential pace threat to Magnitude. He’s partially owned by Clint and Mark Cornett’s C Two Racing Stable, which also co-owns White Abarrio, and thus could be entered in the Whitney to pressure Magnitude into setting a fast early pace, helping White Abarrio’s chances of rallying late for the win. The horse racing slang for such an entrant is a “rabbit,” taken from the mechanical bunny used as the target in greyhound racing. It’s possible that Forged Steel is entered in this race both to help fuel a sizzling early pace and also on his own credentials, as he posted a 9 ½-length win in the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes earlier this year at Santa Anita Park, albeit against a mediocre field. In his race after the Gold Cup win, he finished fifth and 12 lengths behind pace-setting Phileas Fogg in the Suburban Stakes July 4 at Saratoga, but he buckled at the start of that 1 ¼-mile race and raced farther off the early lead than usual before tiring. If he breaks well under new rider Micah Husbands, look for Forged Steel to join Magnitude and possibly Nitrogen in the front rank of contenders Saturday. It would be a surprise to see him in that position during the stretch run.

Analysis: Coming off of a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Stephen Foster, White Abarrio carries morning-line odds of 8-1 for Saturday’s Whitney. If he runs to his early 2026 form, those odds offer great value as an upset Whitney winner. Whether he does so is anyone’s guess however – in his final season of a successful career, this striking gray horse is still defined by inconsistency. He earned a 122 Equibase Speed Figure back in 2023 when he romped in the Whitney by 6 ¼ lengths over Zandon and Cody’s Wish, and that career-top figure is easily the best in this year’s Whitney field. In his four other career starts at Saratoga, however, he’s finished outside of the top three. Back on April 18 of this year, White Abarrio shot past Sovereignty and Journalism to win the Oaklawn Handicap by a widening two lengths … and then followed that with a 9 ¾-length defeat in the Foster. A closer look at White Abarrio’s past performances shows that even in his losses over the past two-plus years, he either had a possible excuse for a bad effort (a sloppy track in the Foster) or otherwise ran evenly, so at the very least he fits in as a trifecta filler against this tough field. A repeat of his Oaklawn Handicap effort from April could give White Abarrio a second Whitney win, and as noted above, Forged Steel might be entered Saturday to apply early pressure and help set up his late rally.

Analysis: Through two 2026 starts, Sovereignty has not kept the form that brought him Horse of the Year honors for his 3-year-old season. He’s finished second in the Oaklawn Handicap to White Abarrio and then third behind Magnitude and stablemate Baeza in the Stephen Foster, and his Equibase Speed Figures have declined from his top numbers posted in last year’s Travers Stakes and Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun. In the Oaklawn Handicap, Sovereignty found himself in an unusual position – setting a contested pace with Journalism – so his late fade to finish two lengths behind White Abarrio can be excused. He had no punch at the top of the Churchill Downs stretch when asked in the Stephen Foster by jockey Junior Alvarado, however, so the Whitney shapes up as a crucial race for his overall career arc as he faces three Foster foes again plus Nitrogen. In his favor are a 3-for-4 career record on Saratoga’s track with aforementioned wins in the Travers and Jim Dandy joining a three-length score in the 2025 Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, and also the prospects of a fast early pace if Magnitude, Nitrogen, and longshot Forged Steel duel for the lead.

Analysis: Tiztastic does not match up with the leading contenders in the Whitney Stakes based on his overall résumé and best speed figures. That said, he offers appeal as a potential trifecta or superfecta filler at high odds, as his closing running style could be aided by a solid early pace set by Magnitude, Nitrogen, and Forged Steel. In a best-case scenario, fast early fractions could tire out one or two of those front-runners and compromise any contender stalking too close behind them, leaving Tiztastic to pick off several gassed horses in the homestretch. This colt, co-owned by Magnitude’s owner Ron Winchell along with Coolmore interests, has raced on both dirt and turf in his career with a notable win in the 2025 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby on dirt. He rallied from last of seven to win his first 2026 start on dirt, a 1 1/8-mile allowance race at Churchill Downs, and most recently grinded his way to a third-place finish in the July 4 Suburban Stakes held at 1 ¼ miles, 11 lengths behind front-running winner Phileas Fogg. This one-dimensional closer seeks a similar result Saturday under Tyler Gaffalione, who gets back abord Tiztastic for the first time since his September 2024 debut.

Analysis: With every new race, the aura of untapped potential surrounding Baeza continues to grow. He first turned heads during the 2025 Triple Crown season with four consecutive solid efforts in the Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, Belmont Stakes, and Jim Dandy Stakes when he finished second, third, third, and second, respectively, before breaking through with a win in last September’s Pennsylvania Derby. Since then, he’s had slow starts in three consecutive races, including both of his 2026 starts at Churchill Downs for new trainer Bill Mott, who took over duties after John Shirreffs died unexpectedly in February. In both the Alysheba Stakes Presented by U.S. Army and the Stephen Foster Stakes, Baeza was flying late in the stretch but could not make up enough ground to compensate for his sluggish starts. This well-bred colt is therefore a risky win bet in the Foster based on his 2-for-11 mark but a must-use in all exacta, trifecta, and superfecta bets. Baeza’s 114 Equibase figure in the Foster equaled his career high, and if he is somehow able to break cleanly from the gate Saturday, he’ll have a chance to leave his “oh so close” reputation behind with a win in one of the sport’s marquee races.
