Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve action heats up on Florida’s other coast on Saturday as the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs kicks off the first of two qualifying stakes at the Gulf Coast track. Saturday’s race will award 20-10-6-4-2 qualifying points to the top-five finishers in the 1 1/16-mile stakes and also serve as a prep for the March 7 ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby at the track.

Sam F. Davis Stakes

Racetrack: Tampa Bay Downs, Tampa, Fla.

Date: Feb. 7

Purse: $250,000

Distance: 1 1/16 miles

Race: 11

Post Time: 5:30 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Classic Causeway (2022), McCracken (2017), Destin (2016), General Quarters (2009), Any Given Saturday (2007), Bluegrass Cat (2006)

First held: 1981

1. Confessional (2-1 morning-line odds): Comes off a second in a Gulfstream Park allowance race but that was to Nearly, who won the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park last weekend. If he takes a step forward off that race, he will be tough to beat with Flavien Prat aboard.

JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Brad Cox

2. Epic Desire (15-1): Just earned his first career win here in his fifth try. The speed figure wasn’t compelling, painting him as a longshot in this field.

JOCKEY: Samy Camacho; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

3. The Puma (6-1): Turned in a solid debut in a Gulfstream maiden special weight race, posting a sharp speed figure. Could be a contender here, but he is also entered in a maiden race at Gulfstream on Saturday.

JOCKEY: Javier Castellano; TRAINER: Gustavo Delgado

4. Game for It (20-1): Won his debut at Aqueduct Dec. 10 despite stumbling at the start. Has been working nicely in Florida and could register a surprise here.

JOCKEY: Luis Rivera Jr.; TRAINER: Chad Summers

5. Ocelli (12-1): Still a maiden after three tries, although he was second and third at this distance. Could be a late factor in the superfecta but hard to back for the win spot.

JOCKEY: Joseph D. Ramos; TRAINER: Whit Beckman

6. Renegade (8-5): Was a good second in the Remsen Stakes to a top Kentucky Derby candidate in Paladin. Has a nice series of workouts for this and looms a deserving favorite.

JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher

7. Wayne’s Law (30-1): Was third in a Delta Downs stakes last time out. The morning-line price is very attractive for a colt whose speed figures are competitive with much of the field.

JOCKEY: Marcos Meneses; TRAINER: Amador Sanchez

8. Max Capacity (30-1): Tired after making a middle move in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes. Has not displayed much of a reason to believe he will like the distance.

JOCKEY: Jevian Toledo; TRAINER: Richard Sillaman

9. Dr. Kapur (5-1): Disappointed in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes after two promising  maiden tries. Should be a factor off his best try.

JOCKEY: Samuel Marin; TRAINER: Saffie Joseph Jr.

THE PICK: Renegade

LIVE LONGSHOT: Wayne’s Law

SUPERFECTA: 6-1-9-7
