Tiztastic Wins Louisiana Derby, Undefeated Good Cheer Takes Fair Grounds Oaks
2024 Pat O’Brien Stakes at a Glance
RacingAt a seven-furlong distance, the Pat O’Brien Stakes may not be a mirror image of the six-furlong Breeders’ Cup Sprint, but it does showcase the nation’s premier dirt sprinter. Contested at the same track as the Nov. 2 BC Sprint, the Grade 2 Pat O’Brien features The Chosen Vron, who has won six straight races and, after winning the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, will try to sweep the major sprint stakes at the Del Mar summer meet.
1. Moose Mitchell (20-1): He broke from the rail in last year’s Pat O’Brien and finished seventh. Seems a cut below graded stakes company.
JOCKEY: Jeremy Laprida; TRAINER: George Papaprodromou
2. See Through It (30-1): Had some trouble when fourth in the Bing Crosby but he was 57.70-1 that day and he’s a newcomer to seven furlongs. Should be a longshot once again.
JOCKEY: Tiago Pereira; TRAINER: Genaro Vallejo
3. Happy Jack (8-1): Was hurt by a wide trip in the Bing Crosby and could bounce back to the form he displayed in winning the Grade 2 Triple Bend Stakes back in June. There are certainly things to like.
JOCKEY: Edwin Maldonado; TRAINER: Doug O’Neill
4. Raging Torrent (6-1): Comes off a pair of decisive wins at Churchill Downs, both at seven furlongs. Has plenty of early speed and could be hard to catch in this field.
JOCKEY: Antonio Fresu; TRAINER: Doug O’Neill
5. Big City Lights (10-1): Highly consistent 5-year-old has never been worse than third in 10 career starts, winning five times and finishing second four times. Was third in the Triple Bend and looms a threat to land in the exotics once again.
JOCKEY: Kazushi Kimura; TRAINER: Richard Mandella
6. The Chosen Vron (3-5): Seeks a seventh straight win and won each of his last two starts by more than two lengths, including the Grade 1 Bing Crosby over this track. No reason to look beyond him in search of a winner.
JOCKEY: Hector Berrios; TRAINER: Eric Kruljac
7. Senor Buscador (5-1): A big threat in terms of accomplishments, but this distance may be a bit short for him. Winner of the $20 million Saudi Cup at 1 1/8 miles, he last raced March 30 and finished third in the $12 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline at 1 ¼ miles. This seems a prep for bigger races with a tough customer awaiting him in The Chosen Vron.
JOCKEY: Joe Talamo; TRAINER: Todd Fincher
8. Arrowthegreat (30-1): Has not distinguished himself in graded stakes and figures to want more distance. We’ll pass.
JOCKEY: Victor Espinoza; TRAINER: Dan Blacker
THE PICK: The Chosen Vron
LIVE LONGSHOT: Big City Lights
