The Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes, which was moved to Santa Anita Park in 2014 following the closure of Hollywood Park, is a historically significant Southern California race with a roll call of accomplished winners along with the memorable personalities connected to them throughout a history that spans 10 decades.

From inaugural winner Seabiscuit in 1938 right up to Defunded giving Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert his record ninth win in the race last year, surpassing fellow Hall of Famer Charlie Whittingham, this famed 1 ¼-mile race has established a lasting legacy as a marquee test of ability in the older dirt male division.

Let’s take a closer look at the field for this year’s edition.

First held: 1938

1. Reincarnate (4-1 morning-line odds): Winless in three starts this year with his best effort a third-place finish in the Santa Anita Handicap presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino two starts back in March at this distance. His trainer has won this race a record nine times, so it would be wise to respect his chances.

JOCKEY: Juan Hernandez; TRAINER: Bob Baffert

2. Ashcroft (15-1): Faces a big test in terms of caliber of competition going from a first-level allowance race to one of the marquee stakes for older dirt males. Tough to see him winning, but he has tactical speed, enters the Hollywood Gold Cup on a two-race winning streak, and should be a big price.

JOCKEY: Kent Desormeaux; TRAINER: Bob Hess Jr.

3. Judge Miller (5-2): Faded to second as the 3-10 favorite in his stakes debut in the Grade 3 Californian Stakes but the lightly raced Curlin colt out of three-time Grade 1 winner Cavorting, by Bernardini, could improve in his third start of the year and his second try in a stakes race. A win contender.

JOCKEY: Frankie Dettori; TRAINER: Mark Glatt

4. Oviatt Class (30-1): Last competed in a stakes race in January 2022 but has held his own against allowance competition in seven subsequent starts with two wins, a second, and a third. Looks a rung below the best of this bunch and has never won a race longer than a mile, but he could be the beneficiary of a potentially fast pace. Live longshot to fill out the trifecta.

JOCKEY: Umberto Rispoli; TRAINER: Vladimir Cerin

5. Mr Fisk (2-1): Enters off a dominant win in the Grade 3 Californian Stakes and has won three of his last four starts for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who owns a record nine wins in the Hollywood Gold Cup. Making his first start at this distance but in top form for a top trainer.

JOCKEY: Kazushi Kimura; TRAINER: Bob Baffert

6. Subsanador (5-2): He ran a monster race in his second start in the U.S. when setting the pace and coming up a head short of Newgate in a runner-up finish in the Santa Anita Handicap presented by Yaamava’ Resort & Casino. A repeat of that race would make him a key player here at the same 1 ¼-mile distance.

JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Richard Mandella

7. Mixto (12-1): Winless in six starts against stakes competition but he’s always pretty consistently in the mix with three top-three finishes in his last four tries. Could spice up the exotics at an appealing price.

JOCKEY: Antonio Fresu; TRAINER: Doug O’Neill

8. Arrowthegreat (30-1): A big question at this class level and this distance. He was a well-beaten fourth in his lone previous try against stakes competition in the 1 1/8-mile Native Diver Stakes, which also was his only start to date in a race longer than a mile. Should be prominent early but unlikely to still be in the hunt late.

JOCKEY: Victor Espinoza; TRAINER: Juan Landeros

THE PICK: Mr Fisk

LIVE LONGSHOT: Oviatt Class

SUPERFECTA: 5-6-4-3
