Reincarnate

Reincarnate finished second in each of his first three races, two on the grass and one on dirt and twice he was beaten by less than a length. He earned a breakthrough victory Nov. 25, 2022, in his fourth and final start as a 2-year-old when winning a one-mile maiden special weight race by three-quarters of a length at Del Mar after leading from start to finish.

His trainer at the time, Bob Baffert, next tested Reincarnate against stakes competition in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes Jan. 8, 2023, and he showed impressive tenacity when fighting back after being headed in the stretch to fend off stablemate Newgate for the victory after setting the early pace.

With Reincarnate pointing to Kentucky Derby prep races and trainer Bob Baffert suspended by Churchill Downs and unable to qualify his horses, Reincarnate was transferred from Baffert to the barn of trainer Tam Yakteen so the horse could earn qualifying points as he continued on the Road to the 2023 Kentucky Derby.  His first start for Yakteen came in the Grade 2 $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Feb. 25. In the Rebel, Reincarnate suffered a troubled trip when blocked and then bothered by another horse when looking for room to launch his stretch rally. Reincarnate made two or three runs in the stretch, but had to settle for third due, in part, to the troubled trip under jockey John Velazquez. With the third-place finish, however, Reincarnate was successful in earning his first 15 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Reincarnate make his next start in the Grade 1 $1.25 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on April 1. Sent off as the 3.3-1 second choice in the field of 10, Reincarnate finished third behind Angel of Empire and longshot King Russell. He earned 30 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, raising his total to 45 and likely giving him enough to earn a spot in the starting gate at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. In his subsequent start in the Kentucky Derby on May 6, Reincarnate finished 13th of 18 horses.

Reincarnate returned to Southern California and made his next start a winning one when he took the $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby over a five horse field on July 8, running the 1 1/8-mile distance in a winning time of 1:48.72 to score by three lengths.

Reincarnate is from the first crop of 2017 champion 2-year-old male Good Magic and was produced by the stakes-winning Scat Daddy mare Allanah.
