Kentucky Downs is the place for American turf racing on a European style course. It’s also the home of huge purses. Saturday’s loaded card offers large fields of good turf horses looking to cash in.

Leading the way among the afternoon’s five graded stakes races will be the $3 million 1/ST Bet Nashville Derby Invitational for 3-year-olds, the $2 million AGS Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational Stakes for 3-year-olds and older, and the $1.5 million Ainsworth Music City Stakes for female sprinters.

The deep fields of quality grass horses promise to be a challenging puzzle for handicappers. Being able to connect on a price in at least one of these races will be the difference between an average day of betting and an excellent one. Read on as I highlight my favorite longshots and value plays from this stacked card of turf racing from Kentucky Downs.

Race #7, $2 million AGS Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational Stakes, 1 ½ miles, turf, 4:56 p.m. ET

#10 Fort George (9-2 morning-line odds): He is the co-third choice in the field of 10, but with Burnham Square, Ethical Diamond, and Tiffany among the entrants, I believe there is a good chance his odds will drift up a bit from what is listed on the program. Make no mistake, this is a top field of turf route horses and Fort George will have to run an excellent race to earn a victory on Saturday. I believe there are plenty of good signs for the English-bred gelding.

Trained by Ed Walker, the 4-year-old made his North American debut eight weeks ago at Saratoga. Stalking a very slow early pace by race favorite Ole Crazy Bone, Fort George closed relentlessly down the stretch but lost the Grade 2 Bowling Green Stakes Presented by Emerald Ecovations by a whisker. Not only was it a strong first run in the U.S., but it was his second excellent effort in as many two tries going 1 3/8 miles or longer.

A progressive runner, he has always been consistent but continues to get better with maturity. In his only previous try at the 1 1/2-mile distance, he was a very good second to champion Rebel’s Romance, a two-time winner of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. Given time since his run at Saratoga, I expect a big effort on Saturday at attractive odds.

Race #8, $3 million 1/ST Bet Nashville Derby Invitational, 1 5/16 miles, turf, 5:36 p.m. ET

#6 Caroline St. Beat (20-1): The richest race of the afternoon could also be the best betting opportunity of the entire card. With the European duo of Causeway and Glacius expected to take a lion’s share of the wagering here, every other horse in the field will have juicy odds, and that will certainly be true of my longshot play in the Nashville Derby.

It certainly is a tough spot, but I believe this New York-bred chestnut colt is ready to take a step forward. Trained by one of America’s top turf trainers, Miguel Clement, the son of red-hot sire Tiz the Law has been consistently good in four career starts. After a promising start to his career with two nice efforts as a juvenile, Caroline St. Beat returned to the races this summer with two sharp efforts at Saratoga.

He will be stepping up in class and distance on Saturday, but the pedigree says he should handle the trip. After two good starts to start his season, he also should be ready to fire his best in his third run after the layoff. The favorites will take some beating here, but I cannot resist taking a shot at big odds on a horse who I believe has a real future.

Race #10, $1.5 million Ainsworth Music City Stakes, 6 ½ furlongs, turf, 6:49 p.m. ET

Somerset West wins San Clemente Handicap (Eclipse Sportswire)

#7 Somerset West (20-1): This race for female turf sprinters revolves around Cy Fair. The winner of the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint comes into this off two nice wins and will be an overwhelming favorite. She has not run at this course before, however, and has never been beyond 5 ½ furlongs. Breaking from the rail, I think she could be vulnerable to an upset on Saturday. There are several in the full field who could step up, but it is a California-based filly that most interests me.

Somerset West has been solid in all five career starts for trainer John Sadler and is getting better each race. After four sprints, including three at the 6 1/2-furlong distance, the Kantharos filly stepped up in distance and class last time to upset a good field in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap at a mile seven weeks ago at Del Mar. I wish I had her that afternoon at 35-1, but she should have very nice odds again in this one.

With a strong early pace expected here, set by fillies who might not appreciate the extra furlong and the taxing Kentucky Downs’ stretch, it should set up nicely for a filly who can finish full of run. Coming out of the strong mile race and proven at the distance, Somerset West should fit the bill nicely. At 20-1 on the morning line and picking up top rider Luis Saez, I expect her to outrun her odds in the Music City.
