The $500,000 Suburban Stakes Presented by Subourbon Life July 4 at Saratoga Race Course drew a terrific field that includes the top-two finishers from last year’s edition plus seven other stakes winners.
Both #6 Phileas Fogg and #7 Antiquarian, who ran one-two in this race last July, own a win on this main track at this 1 ¼-mile distance, and both have tactical speed that should be advantageous.
Phileas Fogg controlled the pace a year ago and held off Antiquarian by a head, but he was winless in his next four starts before a confidence-building allowance win May 1 at Aqueduct when he led from start to finish. He’s one of several entered who could vie for the lead, including front-running Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes winner #2 Forged Steel.
Antiquarian is not a candidate to set the pace but Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez should be able to find a spot just in behind the leaders. He won the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup last August at 1 ¼ miles on this track and profiles as a major player.
Forged Steel was entered in the Stephen Foster Stakes June 27, but trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. scratched him in favor of this spot and he must be respected.
The contender that caught my eye who could offer significant value is #8 Hit Show. The 2025 Dubai World Cup winner has not raced at Saratoga since an unplaced finish in his 3-year-old season, but three years later at age 6, the son of Candy Ride is a much better racehorse. He opened this year with a graded stakes win at Fair Grounds before running fifth in his repeat bid in the Dubai World Cup. He returned May 30 at Churchill Downs and finished third in the Grade 3 Blame Stakes, beaten by 1 ½ lengths by #10 Original Sin, who he’ll face again in the Suburban.
Trip handicappers will note that Hit Show was full of run with nowhere to go into deep stretch in the Blame Stakes. Once he was guided to a clear path, he closed powerfully and was gaining ground late. Hit Show has won at the highest level at this distance, he should get some pace to set up his closing bid, and I think he fits well with this group. I’m hoping for a solid price.
Original Sin and #9 Stars and Stripes are a pair of stakes winners on the rise who could take a step forward and be a factor here, and #4 Parchment Party’s only loss in his last five races came on grass in the Melbourne Cup. It’s a very good field and difficult to pare down the contenders for exotic bets, so I’ll focus on a win bet as my primary play with Hit Show and maybe try to pair him with others offering value in the exacta pool as post time nears.
