Horseplayers looking for an opportunity to turn a tidy profit in Saturday’s Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing are on a collision course with arguably the best 3-year-old racing in North America of either gender and a dead-cinch repeat champion come January when the Eclipse Awards are announced.

Songbird (#5) enters the Cotillion with a flawless 10-for-10 record, nine of those coming in graded stakes. The Jerry Hollendorfer-trained filly has won six times at age 3, and her most recent wins came in Saratoga’s two marquee route races for 3-year-old females, the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama Stakes.

Possessing the sort of dominating speed not seen from a 3-year-old filly since 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, Songbird hasn’t been threatened yet. She also hasn’t gone off at more than 1-2 odds since dominating the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies almost a year ago, and those are her morning-line odds in Saturday’s race. Surveying the Cotillion’s six-horse field, a post-time price of 3-10 or thereabouts for Songbird seems guaranteed.

So, strategies for cashing a profitable ticket in the Cotillion basically fall along two paths: taking a strong – and likely futile – stand against Songbird, or finding the right horse(s) to place underneath the superstar in an exacta or trifecta. (If you’re playing the Pick 3 or Pick 4, consider singling Songbird; the Cotillion is the second leg of Parx’s closing Pick 4 on Saturday, immediately followed by a competitive running of the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby. Two of Songbird’s five challengers – Disco Rose (#3) and Queena Esther (#6) – are based at Parx and have won on its dirt main track, but otherwise appear outclassed. The other three horses scheduled to run in the Cotillion, however, are all graded stakes-winning, high-caliber fillies. Two of them, Land Over Sea and Carina Mia, have already raced against Songbird to little avail, the former doing so a deflating five straight times last fall and spring.

Land Over Sea (#4) is intriguing at 10-1 morning-line odds, as she clearly did not like racing on turf in her most recent start in the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks Invitational, and had a rough trip in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes the race before that.

Carina Mia (#1) hung with Songbird for a while during the CCA Oaks and finished well clear of the rest as the runner-up before checking in third in the seven-furlong Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga after pressing a hot pace. The remaining contender, John Servis-trained Cathryn Sophia (#2), is the Cotillion’s second choice on the morning line at 5-2, and has two clear advantages over the others: she has won twice at Parx, including a blowout score in the one-mile Princess of Sylmar Stakes on Sept. 3; and she’s never raced against Songbird.

Cathryn Sophia looked fantastic winning the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks, but Songbird deserves every bit of her heavy favoritism and simply towers over all of the other fillies in her class. As for how the race should be run, Cathryn Sophia and Carina Mia both have shown versatility and the ability to win when either setting the pace or stalking. That’s been a winning strategy in the Cotillion, as the last three editions were won by fillies who sat just off of the pace before taking command: I’m a Chatterbox, Untapable, and Close Hatches.

Connections for both Cathryn Sophia and Carina Mia would be unwise, however, to place their charges in a speed duel with the mighty Songbird, and therefore my strategy for a trifecta bet with Songbird on top in the Cotillion rests on jockey Javier Castellano’s skill at judging pace and putting his filly Cathryn Sophia in the right stalking position through the backstretch.

I envision Cathryn Sophia making a strong, but unsuccessful, challenge to front-running Songbird in the far turn of the Cotillion’s 1 1/16 mile distance, and having enough in reserve to hold a clear second over a closing Land Over Sea. I’ll make that my main trifecta bet on a straight ticket for $15, with the hopes that Land Over Sea goes off at 10-1 or higher and that her previous two races were aberrations. A $1 trifecta with 3-10 Songbird in first, 3-1 Cathryn Sophia in second, and 12-1 Land Over Sea in third should pay somewhere around $9-$12. Multiply that by $15 and you’ve got enough to treat family and friends to Philly cheesesteaks and (domestic) beers.

I’ll also make another straight trifecta wager for $5 using Carina Mia in third, based on her class and connections (jockey Julien Leparoux, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott). Estimating that payout at around $5 for a $1 bet would produce a modest profit, but also keep the bankroll alive for a potentially much more lucrative bet in the Pennsylvania Derby.
