Luster Leads Dominant Weekend for the Ladies, Soars Up Equibase Leaderboard
Racing
There were 44 stakes races run across North America last week, including a memorable King’s Plate card at Woodbine and key graded stakes action at Saratoga and Del Mar, which led to significant changes in every division on the North American leaderboard. Fillies and mares shined brightest over the weekend with Luster beating the boys in the $1 million King’s Plate and Survie becoming the second female in history to win the Grade 1 Christophe Clement Turf Stakes, formerly the Sword Dancer Stakes.

Luster, a 3-year-old daughter of Knicks Go trained by Josie Carroll, was simply spectacular in the 167th running of the King’s Plate and became the 40th filly in history to win Canada’s oldest Thoroughbred race. Heavily favored at odds of 0.25-1, Luster took the lead entering the stretch and went on to win by 7 ¼ lengths under John Velazquez, adding $432,449 in earnings to her resume.
Luster started her 3-year-old campaign in April with a win on the turf at Keeneland before switching to the all-weather Tapeta Footings surface at Woodbine in May when third by 1 ¼ lengths in the Ruling Angel Stakes. Luster then won the Grade 3 Selene Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths before dominating the Woodbine Oaks Presented by Stella Artois by 5 ½ lengths under Velazquez, who is 3-for-3 aboard Luster by a combined winning margin of 17 ¾ lengths. With four wins from five starts and $886,592 in 2026 purse earnings, Luster rose to fourth among 3-year-old fillies and 22nd on the overall earnings leaderboard.
Survie, a 5-year-old mare by Churchill, has made quite the impression since shipping to North America at the end of July. She won her U.S. debut at Saratoga on Aug. 2 by 1 ¾ lengths in the Grade 2 Glens Falls Stakes and just 13 days later Survie rallied from last to first under Manny Franco to beat the boys in the Christophe Clement and earn an automatic berth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf Oct. 31 at Keeneland. Survie earned the highest Equibase Speed Figure of the week with a 112 and moved into the top 10 among older females and 48th overall with $550,000 in 2026 North American earnings.
Another filly who beat the boys over the weekend at Woodbine was De la Renta, a 2-year-old Oscar Performance filly trained by Kevin Attard who rallied gamely to win by a head over Speaker’s Speech in the Soaring Free Stakes. De la Renta started her career in July with a 3 ¼-length victory in a maiden special weight on the all-weather surface at Woodbine before switching to the turf in the Soaring Free. She moved into 20th in the 2-year-old filly division with $96,677 in earnings.
Three races later, another Attard-trained filly moved into 21st in the 2-year-old filly division with a win in the Catch A Glimpse Stakes when switching to the turf from the all-weather. Meloni, an American Pharoah filly, swung seven wide on the final turn and utilized a brilliant rally to win the Catch A Glimpse by 3 ½ lengths while earning the highest Equibase Speed Figure of any 2-year-old last week with a 91.
Jose Ortiz, who retook the top spot on the leaders list last week, continues to dominate this year and won at a 44% clip last week to lead all jockeys with 16 wins and $1,215,825. Brad Cox remains on top of the earnings leaderboard among trainers, extending his lead to nearly $3 million.
Godolphin, the Eclipse Award winner as outstanding owner every year since 2020, moved into first by purse earnings on the North American owners leaderboard, leading Klaravich Stables by just $7,893. Godolphin has 40 wins and $5,609,183 in earnings in North America so far in 2026.
