The Secretariat Stakes typically draws many of the best 3-year-old turf horses in the U.S., and this year’s edition drew a field of nine sophomores for the 1 1/16-mile test.

The Secretariat was moved in 2023 to Colonial Downs along with the Arlington Million and Beverly D. Stakes following closure of Arlington International in 2021 and subsequent sale of the beloved Chicago-area venue. The previous host track introduced the Arlington Invitational in 1973 with one goal: attract Triple Crown winner Secretariat to the racetrack. “Big Red” dominated the race by nine lengths and the next year it was renamed in his honor.

1. Turf Star (6-1 morning-line odds): Closed powerfully to win the James W. Murphy Stakes on the Preakness Stakes undercard with a final quarter-mile in :22.69, but he has been beaten by five or more lengths in each of his other three starts this year. A threat at his best and could offer value for a jockey-trainer tandem that is winning at a 29% clip since the start of 2025.

2. Conducted (6-1): Closed his 2-year-old season with back-to-back open-length wins while setting the pace, including a 1 ½-length victory in the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance Stakes on Breeders’ Cup Friday at Del Mar. He makes his first start in nine months for new trainer Jose D’Angelo, who wins at 21% off extended layoffs like this, but might need a race to regain his top form.

3. Supercharger (7-2): Ships in from Kentucky for his stakes debut after consecutive wins at 1 1/8 miles at Churchill Downs. A deep closer from the barn of Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Cherie DeVaux, Supercharger could be aided by a fast pace and appears to be figuring things out. A legitimate win candidate.

4. Fuzzbuster (8-1): Cross-entered in an Aug. 1 allowance race at Ellis Park, Fuzzbuster’s lone previous race on turf was a runner-up finish in a June sprint at Churchill Downs. He most recently won a one-mile maiden race that was washed off the grass and held on a sloppy main track. He doesn’t look overmatched in terms of speed figures but faces a significant class and surface test. Trainer Vicki Oliver and jockey Velazquez have been a very profitable pairing over last two years.

5. Vino Solo (20-1): A deep closer who has been well-beaten in each of his last four starts, Vino Solo figures to be the biggest longshot in the Secretariat Stakes and his speed figures indicate he would need to run the race of his life to be any kind of factor. Looking elsewhere.

Alpyland (Coady Media)

6. Infiltrate (10-1): Showed promise as a 2-year-old with two wins and a second in three starts, but he has not raced in more than eight months and has yet to race on turf. His pedigree indicates he could handle the shift to the grass, but this is a tall order coming from a long stretch on the sidelines. Could also be overbet thanks to a potent jockey-trainer tandem.

7. Street Beast (8-1): One of four entrants who has been most effective setting or pressing the pace, Street Beast’s lone win of the year came on the all-weather surface at Turfway Park during a two-start stretch on the Triple Crown trail. He subsequently ran well when beaten by only a length in his return to the turf for the UK HealthCare Transylvania Stakes in April at Keeneland before fading badly in a Grade 1 turf race on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Cross-entered in a stakes race Sunday at Ellis Park but doesn’t appear outclassed here.

8. Redland Rebels (15-1): Opened the year with a second-place finish in a turf stakes before running fourth in the ESMARK Tampa Bay Derby and sixth in the Arkansas Derby this spring while being tested on the Triple Crown trail. He finished fast in his most recent start in a 7 ½-furlong turf race at Gulfstream Park and could outrun his odds in this spot for a jockey-trainer pairing that has won at 23% since the start of 2025.

9. Alpyland (9-5): Enters off dominant stakes wins in the Grade 3 Penn Mile Stakes in May and the American Derby in June at Churchill Downs and figures to be the clear favorite. If he can settle in just behind the pace, Alpyland should be tough to beat but that’s no guarantee starting from the outside post with a very short run into the first turn. A strong win candidate but post position is a major concern.
