Rookie Rankings for 2027 Kentucky Derby Prospects: Oct. 26 Edition
Racing
The results of two races on Sunday at Churchill Downs shook up the latest Rookie Rankings.
Since the Rookie Rankings rate 2-year-old Thoroughbreds based on their potential to win the 2027 Kentucky Derby, the Grade 3 Street Sense Stakes — a Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier held over 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs — unsurprisingly affected the rankings.
Mystik Bayou, ranked No. 4 last week, competed in the Street Sense just 22 days after posting an eye-catching maiden win at Belmont Park. It’s possible he regressed while running back on short rest, as he could only finish third, beaten by 5 1/4 lengths. But Mystik Bayou also had to wait in traffic while eager to run around the far turn, which didn’t help his chances.

We believe this is an effort Mystik Bayou can build upon. Don’t forget, when Mystik Bayou’s half-brother (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) Mystik Dan was 2 years old, he finished fifth in an allowance optional-claiming race when running back 13 days after an impressive maiden win. That defeat didn’t stop Mystik Dan from rebounding as a 3-year-old to win the 2024 Kentucky Derby.
As a result, we’ll keep Mystik Bayou in the Rookie Rankings for now, albeit while dropping him to the No. 10 spot. Just outside the Top 10 cutoff is where we’ll place Street Sense winner Jas, a promising son of Triple Crown winner Justify with the pedigree to excel at the Kentucky Derby’s 1 1/4-mile distance.
A one-mile maiden special weight race held about half an hour after the Street Sense likewise impacted the Rookie Rankings. Fools Rush In, from the barn of Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Brad Cox, pressed quarter-mile pace fractions of :23.29 and :46.46 in second place before taking over and finishing strongly to dominate by 4 1/4 lengths in the sharp time of 1:36.29.
This eye-catching performance suggests Fools Rush In could develop into a serious Kentucky Derby contender, which is why he’s debuting at No. 5 in the Rookie Rankings. His win also flattered Endrush, who finished four lengths ahead of Fools Rush In when the two of them debuted in a six-furlong maiden special weight race on Sept. 10 at Churchill. As a result, Endrush is advancing to No. 3 this week.
