A plethora of juvenile races across North America this past weekend, including the first Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and Longines Kentucky Oaks qualifying points races of the season, caused major changes on the Equibase leaderboard for 2-year-olds.

With lucrative purses and qualifying points on the line, new names emerged, divisions were reshuffled, and new rising stars began to take shape.

Spice Runner, a bay 2-year-old colt by Gun Runner, picked up 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with a late-charging victory in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sept. 13. Trained by Steve Asmussen and ridden by Jose Ortiz, the Winchell Thoroughbreds homebred debuted with a 2 ¼-length victory at Churchill. He followed with a fifth in the Bashford Manor Stakes and a runner-up finish in the Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes before breaking through with his first graded stakes win in the Iroquois. With the victory, he moves into fourth in the 2-year-old male division with $293,170 in earnings

Churchill also hosted the Grade 3 Pocahontas Stakes on Saturday, the first Kentucky Oaks prep race of the season, awarding 10 qualifying points to the winner. Taken by the Wind, a 2-year-old filly by Rock Your World, dominated by 5 ¼ lengths to remain undefeated from two starts for trainer Ken McPeek. With back-to-back victories by a combined margin of 8 ¼ lengths, she now ranks 13th in the 2-year-old filly division with $180,710 in earnings.

There were three Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series races Sept. 20 at Woodbine for the Turf Champions Day card: the $1 million Rogers Woodbine Mile Stakes, a qualifying race for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF; the $500,000 bet365 Summer Stakes, a qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Oct. 31 at Del Mar; and the $500,000 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes, which is a Challenge Series race for the $1 million John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
