Ron Turcotte: Secretariat’s Hall of Fame Rider
Saturday’s card at Saratoga Race Course was one to remember, featuring a memorable five consecutive Grade 1 races, including the $1.25 million DraftKings Travers Stakes. Sovereignty , this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve and Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets winner, headlined the short field of five in the Travers and delivered a performance befitting a 3-10 favorite, dominating by 10 lengths over Bracket Buster, who was the lone challenger who gave any sort of resemblance of a challenge.
Sovereignty became the first horse in history to win the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy Stakes, and Travers. The Godolphin homebred by Into Mischief remains first on the Equibase purse earnings leaderboard, extending his lead to more than $2 million over second-place Journalism with $5,692,020 in 2025 earnings.
Sovereignty earned a 112 Equibase Speed Figure for his Travers romp under Junior Alvarado, who has been aboard for all six of his career wins. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott said he will train Sovereignty up to the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Reigning Horse of the Year Thorpedo Anna did not disappoint on Saturday at the Spa. Fresh off a three-length victory in the Grade 2 Fasig-Tipton Fleur de Lis Stakes at Churchill Downs in late June, Thorpedo Anna gave it her all on Saturday, winning the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes by a nose over a very game Dorth Vader, who matched her stride for stride in the final eighth of a mile. This was Thorpedo Anna’s fourth graded stakes win of the year and seventh career Grade 1 victory, bringing her yearly earnings to $1,564,750 and moving her up three spots on the overall leaderboard into fifth. Thorpedo Anna remains the leader in the older female division.
On Aug. 22 in West Virginia, Charles Town was the center of attention with all eyes on the $1 million Charles Town Classic. Banishing, a 5-year-old gelding by Ghostzapper, drew away to win the Classic by 2 ¼ lengths for trainer David Jacobson with Tyler Gaffalione aboard. Banishing earned his second consecutive stakes win. Now with four wins and four seconds all in stakes races this year, Banishing moved up nine spots into fourth in the overall leaderboard and second in the older male division with $1,566,730 in 2025 earnings.
There was no significant movement in the jockey or trainer standings last week. Flavien Prat held the top spot on the jockey leaderboard for the 10th straight week, surpassing $23 million in earnings for 2025. On the training side, Brad Cox also maintained his lead, moving past $18 million in earnings this year, nearly $2.5 million ahead of Steve Asmussen in second.
