Sandman Takes Lead in 3-Year-Old Division, Jose Ortiz Rises in Equibase Standings

Sandman, a $1.2 million yearling purchase and son of leading sire Tapit, secured his first career graded stakes victory on March 29 at Oaklawn Park with a dominant 2 ½-length win in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby or trainer Mark Casse. With Jose Ortiz aboard, he delivered a career-best 104 Equibase Speed Figure at the Hot Springs, Ark, track.

Sandman now leads the 3-year-old division and ranks second overall in the purse earnings standings with $1,090,000 after securing the $810,000 winner’s share of the $1.5 million Arkansas Derby purse. In addition to the purse money, Sandman clinched his spot in the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, earning 100 points for his victory. He now sits atop the Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 129 points.

On Saturday, Oaklawn also hosted the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes, a key Longines Kentucky Oaks prep worth 100 points, and Quietside and Simply Joking delivered a stretch run for the ages. Quietside dug deep to get the win by three-quarters of a length over a very game opponent and the Malibu Moon filly earned a career-best 100 Equibase Speed Figure under Ortiz, who swept the Oaks and Derby prep races at Oaklawn. Quietside now has $705,000 in earnings this year, which ranks fourth in the 3-year-old division and sixth overall, and leads all Oaks contenders with 168 points.

Gulfstream Park also hosted a pivotal qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby March 29. Tappan Street won the Curlin Florida Derby presented by Hill 'n' Dale Farms at Xalapa by 1 ¼ lengths under a perfectly timed ride by Luis Saez. Following his first career graded stakes victory and first win of 2025, Tappan Street has climbed into fifth in the 3-year-old division and seventh overall with $619,400 in purse earnings. The Brad Cox trainee is now third on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 110 points.

Ortiz topped the North American jockey colony last week with $1,620,913 in earnings following five trips to the winner’s circle while riding at 56% in the money. On Saturday, Ortiz swept both Kentucky Oaks and Derby preps at Oaklawn Park, winning the Fantasy Stakes aboard Quietside and the Arkansas Derby aboard Sandman. Ortiz moved up to second on the 2025 Equibase leaderboard with $5,236,478 in purse earnings. His brother Irad Ortiz Jr. ranks first with $6,731,893.

Cox topped all trainers last week with $1,076,888 in earnings, winning at a 21% clip and 63% in the money. Cox remains second in the standings behind Steve Asmussen by $611,394 in earnings.
