Quietside

Quietside was a standout 2-year-old filly during Saratoga’s summer 2024 meet for trainer John Ortiz, winning her debut in a six-furlong sprint by 6 ¼ furlongs Aug. 4 and then finishing second to Immersive in the Grade 1 Spinaway Stakes at seven furlongs to close out the meet on Aug. 31.

The Shortleaf Stable homebred daughter of Malibu Moon stayed in stakes company for her final two starts of 2024 and stretched out to 1 1/16 miles, and she continued to hold her own, posting a third-place finish behind Immersive and Quickick in the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland in October and then a runner-up effort behind Good Cheer in the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes Nov. 30 at Churchill Downs.

In her first start at age 3, Quietside was favored at 1-2 odds in the 1 1/16-mile Martha Washington Stakes Jan. 25 at Oaklawn Park. She finished second by 5 ¾ lengths to Take Charge Milady and continued to amass qualifying points for the 2025 Longines Kentucky Oaks, adding 10 to her 2024 tally to total 18.

Quietside then contested a loaded edition of the Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes Feb. 23 at Oaklawn, also held at 1 1/16 miles. She was overlooked by bettors at odds of over 10.20-1 in a field that included unbeaten Muhimma, Take Charge Milady, and several other high-class fillies. With jockey Jose Ortiz aboard for the first time, Quietside sat just off of early leader Five G, took a short lead over that foe in midstretch, and was all out to hold her off as well as third-place Muhimma to capture her first stakes victory, winning by a length. She moved into second place on the Kentucky Oaks points leaderboard behind Good Cheer, adding 20 more to her total to reach 38.

Quietside solidified her status as a Kentucky Oaks contender with another win in her next start, which came in the Grade 2 $750,000 Fantasy Stakes going 1 1/16 miles at Oaklawn Park on March 29. Sent off as the 3-5 favorite in a field of nine 3-year-old fillies in the Fantasy, Quietside fought on or close to the pace all the way against the second favorite, Simply Joking, and got the best of a stretch duel to win by three-quarters of a length in a time of 1:44.33 under jockey Jose Ortiz.  

Bred in Kentucky, Quietside is out of the Grade 2-winning Speightstown mare Benner Island and is from the family of champion filly Eliza and Santa Anita Derby winner Dinard.
