Miesque: Outracing the Boys to Become the First Two-Time Breeders' Cup Winner
2025 Pennsylvania Derby at a Glance
Racing
The Pennsylvania Derby offers 3-year-olds a last chance to chalk up a Grade 1 win in a two-turn race against horses of their own age. It will also offer a few of them a chance to pick up a Grade 1 win in a 3-year-old stakes without division leaders Sovereignty and Journalism on hand to relegate them to minor shares of the purse.
The top threats in the race – Baeza, Gosger, Magnitude, and Goal Oriented – all have finished in the top three behind the two classic winners in Grade 1 stakes. On Saturday, they will slug it out to see who is No. 3 in the division.
1. So Sandy (15-1 morning-line odds): Improving 3-year-old comes off a second in the restricted Curlin Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Faces graded stakes company for the first time, but could be a threat with the help of a ground-saving trip.
JOCKEY: Kendrick Carmouche; TRAINER: Cherie DeVaux
2. Altobelli (50-1): Lost by 17 ½ lengths in a starter allowance race last time out and has never raced beyond 6 ½ furlongs. A tossout.
JOCKEY: Angel Castillo; TRAINER: James Nicholson
3. Magnitude (6-1): A much more realistic spot after fading to third in the DraftKings Travers Stakes, 20 ¾ lengths behind the victorious Sovereignty. There’s plenty of speed here, so he’ll be tested and how he holds up should answer some questions about his status in the 3-year-old crop.
JOCKEY: Ben Curtis; TRAINER: Steve Asmussen
4. David of Athens (12-1): Comes off a big, front-running allowance win at Ellis Park but faces a quality field in his first trip as long as a mile and an eighth.
JOCKEY: Tyler Gaffalione; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh
5. Happily Delusional (30-1): Was beaten by more than 10 lengths in both the Smarty Jones and Peter Pan Stakes. Seems ambitiously placed here.
JOCKEY: Paco Lopez; TRAINER: Louis Linder Jr.
6. Goal Oriented (5-2): Took a nice step forward when third by less than a length in the Grade 1 NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes. Has finished behind Gosger twice, but was only a neck behind him in the Haskell. Switching to Irad Ortiz Jr. could pay a dividend.
JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr.; TRAINER: Bob Baffert
7. Big Truzz (10-1): Posted a lopsided win in the Ellis Park Derby. If he can duplicate that effort, he’ll be a player here, but chances are he might bounce tacking 1 1/8 miles for the first time.
JOCKEY: Javier Castellano; TRAINER: Brian Lynch
8. Baeza (2-1): His only win came in a maiden race. But right now he can say he’s third in the division as in his last four races – three of them Grade 1 stakes – the only horses who have finished ahead of him are Sovereignty and Journalism. Looks like the one to beat.
JOCKEY: Hector Berrios; TRAINER: John Shirreffs
9. Gosger (4-1): Second in his last two starts, the NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes and Preakness Stakes, and finished behind Journalism each time. Turned in a great efforts both times and will be a force here.
JOCKEY: Luis Saez; TRAINER: Brendan Walsh
10. Mo Plex (12-1): Will be a big part of the early pace scenario. Was lone speed in the Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun but tired and wound up fourth behind Sovereignty and Baeza. Faces a tough assignment from the outside post.
JOCKEY: Joseph D. Ramos; TRAINER: Jeremiah Englehartt
THE PICK: Baeza
LIVE LONGSHOT: So Sandy
