Champion Fierceness and Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets runner-up Mindframe are both under consideration for the July 20 Grade 1 NYRA Bets Haskell Invitational Stakes July 20 at Monmouth Park, trainer Todd Pletcher reported.
Repole Stable homebred Fierceness, last year's champion 2-year-old male, worked a half-mile in company with graded stakes winning turf mare Suprisingly Friday over the Oklahoma dirt training track at Saratoga Race Course in preparation for a start in the $1 million Haskell at Monmouth Park. The son of City of Light has been unraced since finishing 15th as the favorite in the May 4 Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve.
Mindframe, owned in partnership by Repole and St. Elias Stable, is also likely to start in the Haskell.
An impressive winner of his first two starts, Mindframe finished a credible second in his stakes debut in the Belmont Stakes. The Constitution colt made the lead at the stretch call of the 10-furlong Belmont Stakes at Saratoga but was green in the lane and missed by a half-length to a resurgent and more experienced Dornoch.
Pletcher said Mindframe exited the Belmont Stakes in good order.
"He's been galloping well this week. He looks good and his overall condition is excellent coming out of the race. We'll look for a breeze next weekend," Pletcher said.
Pletcher could also have a third Haskell starter with Spendthrift Farm's Tuscan Sky, the impressive winner of the June 15 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth.
