The Rivalry That Never Was: Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta

The Triple Crown may be over, but there are still several rich opportunities for 3-year-olds to compete in. A case in point is Saturday’s Grade 3 Indiana Derby at Horseshoe Indianapolis, which could propel its winner into the picture for one of the major Grade 1 races later in the summer.
1. Publisher (5-1 morning-line odds): Was bumped and never fired on a wet track in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Before that was a good second in the Arkansas Derby and a repeat of that effort would make him a key contender here.
JOCKEY: Mike Smith; TRAINER: Steve Asmussen
2. Master Controller (15-1): Figures to bounce off a fast maiden win at 6 ½ furlongs in his previous start. Was never better than fifth before that.
JOCKEY: Christopher Emigh; TRAINER: Brittany Vanden Berg
3. Coal Battle (7-2): Has been running against some of the top 3-year-olds and has placed in major Grade 1 stakes. Was third last time in the Matt Winn Stakes and third in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby two starts before that. Hickory runner should be in the mix here.
JOCKEY: Corey Lanerie; TRAINER: Lonnie Briley
4. Shan (30-1): Comes off a pair of seconds in $50,000 claiming races held at six furlongs. Seems overmatched.
JOCKEY: Evin Roman; TRAINER: Ed Moger Jr.
5. Chunk of Gold (6-1): Should get heavy consideration for exotic bets such as the exacta and trifecta. Was second in the Ohio Derby last time and the only time in six career starts that he was worse than second was the Kentucky Derby, when he was ninth. Should be closing nicely in the stretch. Update: Marcus Hersh of Daily Racing Form reported that Chunk of Gold would be withdrawn from the Indiana Derby and target another stakes for 3-year-olds in the coming weeks.
JOCKEY: Jareth Loveberry; TRAINER: Ethan West
6. Tip Top Thomas (6-1): Gets an acid test here. Was second in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes in his second start back in fall 2024 and then was sidelined. Was fourth in a sprint to start his 2025 campaign and then won an allowance optional claiming race at Aqueduct last time out. Deserves a long look in this field.

JOCKEY: John Velazquez; TRAINER: Todd Pletcher
7. Big Truzz (9-2): Tries two turns for the first time but comes off a third in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes Presented by Mohegan Sun at seven furlongs. Is working sharply for this and merits attention.
JOCKEY: Declan Cannon; TRAINER: Brian Lynch
8. Brotha Keny (12-1): Is 2-for-2 over the Horseshoe Indianapolis track but will need to take a big step up in class to be a threat here.
JOCKEY: Joseph Ramos; TRAINER: William Morey
9. Instant Replay (4-1): Comes off a pair of stakes wins for a sharp outfit. The outside post could pose a problem but with a smooth trip, he’ll be hard to handle.
JOCKEY: Luan Machado; TRAINER: Brad Cox
THE PICK: Instant Replay
