Tip Top Thomas

Tip Top Thomas debuted Aug. 24, 2024, at Saratoga Race Course and won a three-quarter-mile sprint by a head after dueling for the lead. Trainer Todd Pletcher next tested the chestnut colt by Volatile in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes Oct. 5 at Aqueduct, where he led into the stretch before coming up 2 ¾ lengths short of runaway winner Chancer McPatrick in a runner-up finish.

Tip Top Thomas returned to the races as a 3-year-old in 2025 and scored his second lifetime win in impressive fashion in his second start of the season when he went wire-to-wire to win a one-mile allowance optional claiming race at Belmont at the Big A by 3 1/4 lengths. Following that win, Tip Top Thomas was sent back up in class against stakes company and sent to Horseshoe Indianapolis for the running of the Grade 3 $300,000 Indiana Derby going 1 1/16 miles on July 5. Sent off as the 2.70-1 third choice in a field of seven horses in the Indiana Derby, Tip Top Thomas went straight to the front but got hooked in a three-length-gap battle for the lead in fast splits. Rather than cave-in, however, Tip Top Thomas put away his early speed challenger and held off the stalkers and closers to hold safe in front and prevailed by a half a length in track record time of 1:41.15 under jockey John Velazquez.

Produced by the winning Consolidator mare Attempt to Name, Tip Top Thomas is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner Gray Attempt.
