The Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity drew five contenders on Sunday’s closing-day card for the Del Mar summer meet with two entrants trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert and the other three from the barn of trainer Doug O’Neill. Let’s take a look at the field for this year’s Del Mar Futurity, which Baffert has won a record 19 times, including the last five editions.

1. Phone Booth (8-1 morning-line odds): After an impressive debut win, the chestnut Pavel colt finished a distant second to fellow Del Mar Futurity contender Hughes in the Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes Aug. 8 on this track. Can he make up 7 ¾ lengths on the winner from that race? It’s a tall order but Phone Booth is a contender to fill out the exacta for leading Del Mar trainer Doug O’Neill.

2. High Pronto (10-1): The second of three entrants from the O’Neill barn enters off a two-length maiden win Aug. 8 in his second start. He finished a distant fourth behind Hughes in his career debut, but he took a nice step forward in his most recent race and should at least be a part of the early pace.

3. Dang Son (15-1): He was well-beaten by Del Mar Futurity entrant Domus in his career debut on the main track July 25 at Del Mar. The Good Magic colt improved in his second race when switching from dirt to turf and stretching out to a mile, earning a sharp one-length win on the grass. Dang Son switches back to dirt here against much better competition and profiles as the longshot in the race.

4. Hughes (4-5): Two wins in as many starts by a combined margin of 13 ¾ lengths make Hughes a logical heavy favorite in this race. The Into Mischief colt stretches out from three-quarters of a mile in the Grade 3 Best Pal Stakes to seven-eighths of a mile here, but he was pulling away late in that 7 ¾-length romp and should have no issues with an extra furlong. A solid bet to give Baffert his record-extending 20^th victory in this race.

5. Domus (7-5): While not as fast on paper as his stablemate one spot to his inside, Domus was nonetheless dominant in his debut July 25 at Del Mar when leading from start to finish in a 5 ½-length runaway victory. Expect him to duel with High Pronto for the early lead and whichever runner has more fuel left late probably will fill out the exacta under Hughes.
