First run in 1903, the Excelsior Stakes is run in the spring at Aqueduct in New York going 1 1/8 miles on the dirt for horses 4 years of age and older. The race is on one of Aqueduct’s biggest weekends, sharing a card with the Wood Memorial, Carter Handicap and Gazelle Stakes. Four jockeys are tied for the most wins at three each with three horses winning the race twice. Allen Jerkens, Pancho Martin and William Winfrey all top the trainers list with three wins each as well.
