The $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic Oct. 31 at Keeneland Race Course is one of the most eagerly anticipated races in recent memory, as the field includes last year’s Classic winner Forever Young vying for a historic repeat win plus the winners of the past two Kentucky Derbys in Sovereignty (2025) and Golden Tempo (2026).

Mike Curry:

Forever Young (Coady Media)

I’m not going to outthink myself on this one. I believe reigning Horse of the Year #2 Sovereignty and last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic winner #5 Forever Young are the class of this field. I’ll structure my trifecta strategy around them finishing first and second or first and third.

I’ll include Pacific Classic winner #7 Knightsbridge in third along with a pair of closers that I think will benefit from a fast pace in dual classic winner #3 Golden Tempo and the other Japan-based runner #1 T O Password. Then I’ll flip that trio into the second spot, as mentioned above, and include Forever Young and Sovereignty in first and third.

This isn’t among my favorite betting races on Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card, so I’ll only make a small investment here and utilize my bankroll on better value plays earlier in the day. Make no mistake, I’m incredibly excited about seeing these great horses battle and it’s an amazing race to close the event, but I prefer other races strictly for betting purposes.

Mike Curry’s Breeders’ Cup Classic trifecta ($18 budget):

$2 trifecta: 2,5 with 2,5 with 1,3,7 ($12)

$1 trifecta: 2,5 with 1,3,7 with 2,5 ($6)

The showdown between #5 Forever Young and #2 Sovereignty is the match-up everyone wants to see, and we’ll finally get it on Saturday. When you also mix in contenders like #6 Magnitude and #7 Knightsbridge, you have one heckuva Breeders’ Cup Classic to look forward to at Keeneland. Forever Young is trying to become only the second horse ever to win the Classic twice, and his form this year winning the $20 million Saudi Cup and in his Belmont Park prep race, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, make him look like the horse to beat for the second year in a row. Potentially standing in his way is the 2025 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty, who had somewhat of a slow start to this season but kicked into high gear most recently when he crushed the field in Saratoga’s Whitney Stakes this summer.

It would have been preferrable to see a fall prep from Sovereignty, which is why I’m leaning toward Forever Young to win, but I still expect a battle between the two top contenders, and I don’t expect to be disappointed. The other top contenders in the field are Magnitude, who won the Dubai World Cup and beat Sovereignty in this summer’s Stephen Foster Stakes, and Knightsbridge, who deserves his spot in this race based on his two big recent wins in a row including a huge 122 Beyer Speed Figure in the Monmouth Cup Stakes and a blowout win in the Pacific Classic where he successfully stretched out to the 1 ¼-mile distance. Let’s use Sovereignty and Forever Young mostly interchangeably in the top slots in the trifectas and use Magnitude and Knightsbridge interchangeably in the bottom slots. Best of luck and enjoy the race!

Noel Michaels’ Breeders’ Cup Classic trifecta ($20 budget):

$2 trifecta: 5 with 2,6,7 with 2,6,7 ($12)

$2 trifecta: 2,5 with 2,5 with 6,7 ($8)

Patrick Reed:

I have maintained that this year’s 3-year-old crop is average overall with no superstar, and I think that will be reflected in the results of Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. I think the older horses will dominate, and as such, will structure trifecta bets with #5 Forever Young and #6 Magnitude as the key horses.

I’ll make two $2 trifecta boxes, one with the above pair and adding #2 Sovereignty, and the other adding #7 Knightsbridge. Then, I’ll make one more trifecta bet, this one for $1, keying Magnitude over Sovereignty, #3 Golden Tempo, Forever Young, and Knightsbridge in second and third. Magnitude has been training lights out at Keeneland leading up to this race, and his only two subpar efforts in the past year and a half came at Saratoga. A big plus is Flavien Prat take the reins for the first time in this spot. I think he’s the most versatile jockey currently riding and his decision-making when positioning Magnitude on the lead or just off it early could pay off with his third Breeders’ Cup Classic in five years.

Patrick Reed’s Breeders’ Cup Classic trifecta ($36 budget):

$2 trifecta box: 2,5,6 ($12)

$2 trifecta box: 5,6,7 ($12)

$1 trifecta: 6 with 2,3,5,7 with 2,3,5,7 ($12)

Dan Tordjman:

Magnitude (Coady Media)

Twice in its last three runnings at Keeneland, the Breeders’ Cup Classic has crowned racing royalty. I won’t compare American Pharoah (2015) or Flightline (2022) to this year’s favorites, Forever Young and Sovereignty, but the race sets up for one of them to add to an already legendary résumé.

When it comes to betting, though, I keep coming back to a horse I think is being overlooked: #6 Magnitude.

How quickly we forget that Magnitude was the favorite in the Whitney Stakes, won by Sovereignty, after sensational wins in the Dubai World Cup and the Stephen Foster Stakes. He stumbled at the start of the Whitney, so I’m forgiving that sixth-place finish. He has won at this 1¼-mile distance, and he has beaten both Forever Young (Dubai) and Sovereignty (Stephen Foster). I also like that Flavien Prat chose to ride him, presumably over another top contender, Knightsbridge.

For the trifecta, it’s hard to see #2 Sovereignty not hitting the board. I’m taking a stand against #5 Forever Young winning. This will be just his second start since March, and he drifted late in the Jockey Club Gold Cup despite winning easily. My two logical outsiders for a piece of the trifecta are #4 The Puma, who I feel is sitting on a big race, and Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner #3 Golden Tempo.

Dan Tordjman’s Breeders’ Cup Classic trifecta ($50 budget):

$10 trifecta: 2,6 with 2,6 with 4 ($20)

$5 trifecta: 2,6, with 2,6, with 3,4,5 ($30)
