Sixteen Things to Know About the Kentucky Derby
2026 Kentucky Derby Data: How Fast This Year’s Contenders Finished
GamblingLess than three weeks out from the 2026 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve, the Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying races are complete and the final field for the run for the roses has come into focus.
None of the prospective 2026 Kentucky Derby starters has ever raced at a distance as long as the Derby’s stamina-testing 1 1/4-mile journey. Determining which horses will thrive navigating 1 1/4 miles can be challenging. One way is to measure how fast each horse ran the last three-eighths of a mile of their final prep race.
A strong finish at the end of a shorter race can indicate a horse capable of staying 1 1/4 miles in the Kentucky Derby. A slow finish suggests the opposite — that a horse may tire while stretching their speed over 1 1/4 miles.
National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor inductee Jennie Rees popularized this approach to handicapping the Kentucky Derby. According to Rees, a strong finish for a Derby contender in their final prep race involves sprinting the last three-eighths of a mile in 38 seconds (:38.00) or less and the final eighth of a mile in 13 seconds (:13.00) or less.
The final three-eighths fractions alone have been a terrific indicator of win-worthy Derby contenders, with 11 of the last 14 Kentucky Derby winners (and 21 of the last 28) finishing their final prep race in less than :38. Even famous longshot winners Rich Strike, Country House, and Giacomo met this sub-:38 standard.

Many factors can affect how fast horses finish at the end of a race, including the speed of the racetrack (which can vary from day to day and from track to track), and the early pace of the race (it’s easier to finish fast when the pace is slow). But even with these caveats, the :38-or-less rule is a solid guide to identifying strong Kentucky Derby contenders.
As of April 14, 30 horses remain under consideration for the 2026 Kentucky Derby. We’ve compiled a chart showing how fast each horse ran the last three-eighths of a mile of their final prep race. Data has been drawn from the race result charts available on equibase.com, attheraces.com, and netkeiba.com.
Since the United Arab Emirates Derby Sponsored by Jumeirah and Fukuryu Stakes are contested at metric distances — which are slightly shorter than races held over Imperial distances, like the rest of the races in the chart — the times we’ve listed for UAE Derby and Fukuryu starters are mathematical projections of how fast the horses might have run at equivalent Imperial distances.

This year, 14 out of 30 prospective Kentucky Derby contenders ran the last three-eighths of a mile of their final prep race in under :38. The two fastest were Incredibolt (:36.14) and Grittiness (:36.33), the top two finishers from the Virginia Derby Presented by New Kent County. It should be noted, however, that the Virginia Derby took place around one turn and during the three-day March race meet at Colonial Downs, which debuted in 2025 and which has produced blazing fast times each of its first two years. The fast finishes for Incredibolt and Grittiness, while respectable, must be taken with a grain of salt.

Next on the list are Commandment and Renegade, the respective winners of the Grade 1 Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa at Gulfstream Park and the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park. Both finished in under :37, and Renegade clocked his final eighth of a mile in :11.84. These are terrific fractions, given that neither Gulfstream nor Oaklawn were producing especially fast times. However, the Florida Derby featured a slow early pace, so that’s one caveat to keep in mind. The slow pace helped The Puma and Chief Wallabee, who finished second and third, also finish in under :37.
Golden Tempo did well to run the final three-eighths of a mile of the Grade 2 Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby in :37.19, a particularly impressive clocking since he was racing 1 3/16 miles, only a sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Kentucky Derby. And while Further Ado ranks 11th on the list, his final three-eighths time of :37.53 from his 11-length romp in the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes is notable since runner-up Ottinho ran the same three furlongs nearly one second slower (in :38.51). Further Ado wasn’t aided by a fast track or a slow early pace; he simply finished fast.
On the other end of the spectrum, a few races produced slow finishing fractions. Fulleffort, winner of the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks, just missed the :38-or-less cutoff by running his last three-eighths of a mile in :38.06. Since the Jeff Ruby often yields fast finishing fractions, Fulleffort’s relatively slow finish was surprising to see. Runner-up Stark Contrast came home even slower, running his final three-eighths of a mile in :38.86.
The Grade 2 Wood Memorial Stakes Presented by Resorts World Casino yielded modest times, too, with the victorious Albus finishing in :38.78 and runner-up Right to Party going only slightly better in :38.61. But they were quite a bit quicker than the runners from the Group 2 UAE Derby. Due at least in part to a fast early pace, UAE Derby one-two finishers Wonder Dean and Six Speed were tiring noticeably late in the race. Over Imperial distances, we project they would have finished in :39.95 and :41.01.
Taking all of these factors together, we’re most impressed by the fast finish of Renegade. Not only did he beat the :38-or-less cutoff by nearly 1.43 seconds, his clocking of :36.57 was 0.86 faster than runner-up Silent Tactic. However, all horses who finished in under :38 warrant respect in the Kentucky Derby.
Good luck with your handicapping!
