Trainer Will Walden, a graduate of the Stable Recovery program, earned the biggest victory of his career Oct. 4 at Keeneland when Rhetorical rallied to victory in the $1.25 million Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes. Rhetorical gave Walden the first Grade 1 victory of his training career and it came on Stable Recovery Day at Keeneland, which made the moment especially poignant.
Walden fell into addiction during college. After 12 years of struggle, he enrolled in the Stable Recovery program in Lexington that connects people with horses and provides them a supportive environment to help them achieve sobriety. Since then, and with plenty of support, the son of WinStar Farm’s Elliott Walden has built his own career as a trainer, hiring several members of his staff who have also achieved sobriety.
