Members from the successful ownership syndicate West Point Thoroughbreds were at Churchill Downs May 1 to root on their filly Counting Stars in the 152nd Kentucky Oaks. Cathleen Murphy, a retired schoolteacher, celebrated her 60th birthday at the Oaks with her family including son Tom, an ownership advisor with West Point. “We haven’t even run the race, and this is already a top-five moment in recent memory,” Tom says that afternoon before the walkover.
Counting Stars made the day even more special for West Point by running third in the Oaks, held under the lights in prime time. “I’ll take third in the Oaks any day – that was so exciting,” Cathleen says. “I couldn’t be happier kicking off a new decade.”
