Spend opening day at Delaware Park with Matt Halter, who has become one of the most recognizable fans in horse racing at his home racetrack where he is a treasured part of the community.
America’s Best Racing is producing a 2026 video series highlighting autism acceptance and inclusion within the sport of horse racing, and 25-year-old Halter enjoyed a fun-filled day at Delaware Park May 13, highlighted by two wins for jockey Carol Cedeno, Halter’s dear friend who made a victorious return from an extended layoff due to injury.
Halter visited the paddock for an interview with Delaware Park’s Stan Salter; chatted with his mom, Megan Dero Halter, about what they love about the venue and the sport; made multiple trips to the winner’s circle; and allowed America’s Best Racing to experience a day in his life at the racetrack.
Delaware Park hosts a special day for those with autism spectrum disorder every year, a passion project for retired trainer Bessie Gruwell, who now serves as executive director of the Delaware Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. This year’s event in conjunction with Autism Delaware will be held Aug. 1 at Delaware Park and offers participants opportunities to visit the paddock and engage with the horses and racing community in an accepting and inclusive atmosphere.
