There were a whopping 34 graded stakes races run throughout North America last week, including 10 Grade 1 stakes and 17 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” races. Not surprisingly, the results reshaped the Equibase overall leaderboard for 2026 North American earnings, particularly in the juvenile and older divisions. For this roundup, we’ll focus on the races that shuffled earnings standings for 2-year-olds pointing toward the Oct. 31 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by TAA, plus a couple of updates on older horses along with jockey and trainer standings.
In the American Pharoah Stakes Presented by DK Horse, the feature race of the at Santa Anita Park Saturday, Oct. 3, Hughes lived up to his heavy favoritism with a six-length romp to punch his ticket to the BC Juvenile and pick up 10 qualifying points for the 2027 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve. Hughes, an Into Mischief colt trained by Bob Baffert, is now 4-for-4 so far in his career by a combined winning margin of 24 ½ lengths, including three consecutive graded stakes scores. With $480,000 in earnings, Hughes now ranks third among 2-year-old males.
Earlier Saturday at Keeneland Race Course, American History punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with a rallying one-length win in the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity and remained a perfect 2-for-2 in his young career following a 7 ¾-length maiden win at Saratoga in August. Along with his Breeders’ Cup berth, the Constitution colt earned 10 points on the Road to the 2027 Kentucky Derby for trainer Todd Pletcher. With $461,213 in earnings, American History is now ranked fourth among juvenile males.
Also on Saturday at Belmont Park, U. S. S. Valor, a 2-year-old War of Will colt who won his debut by 13 ¼ lengths at Saratoga, was dominant once again in the Champagne Stakes. Under Manny Franco, U. S. S. Valor drew clear to win the Champagne by 6 ½ lengths and earned 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Having bankrolled $352,050 in earnings, U. S. S. Valor moved into seventh among juvenile males. While the Champagne was a “Win and You’re In” race for the BC Juvenile, the connections of U. S. S. Valor announced that he would skip the World Championships and focus on preparing for the Kentucky Derby over the winter.
Among the older male and female divisions, two notable wins at Keeneland on Saturday affected the standings. Classic Q became the new earnings leader among older females with a game victory in the First Lady Stakes and moved into eighth overall with $1,512,830. The Classic Empire filly is trained by Mark Casse and is now less than $40,000 in earnings away from $2 million for her career.
In Keeneland’s Saturday feature, the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes, Rhetorical posted a repeat victory in by 2 ¼ lengths for trainer Will Walden with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard. Rhetorical moved into second among older males and sixth overall with $1,583,780 in 2026 earnings. He also earned an automatic berth to the Oct. 31 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF right back at Keeneland.
Jose Ortiz and Flavien Prat remain in a tight race for first in the standings for jockeys based on North American earnings after they both surpassed $36 million, nearly $10 million ahead of any other rider. Brad Cox continues to dominate the trainer standings with less than three months remaining in the year, amassing nearly $5 million more in 2026 earnings than Mark Casse.
