2026 Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles: Smarty Jones Stakes Winner Strategic Risk
RacingWelcome to Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles, where we take a look each week at a recent winner on the Road to the Derby schedule that offers qualifying points to the 1 ¼-mile classic race May 2, 2026, at Churchill Downs.
This week, we take a closer look at Strategic Risk, the 4 ½-length winner of the $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes Jan. 3 at Oaklawn Park. Strategic Risk banked 10 points and rose to 11th on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with a win in his first start in a qualifying race.
Racing Résumé: Strategic Risk was an impressive, front-running debut winner against Florida-breds June 7 at Gulfstream Park, winning a five-furlong race by 8 ¼ lengths over outclassed opposition. After that victory, however, he struggled a bit to find his calling for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, finishing unplaced and well-beaten in a dirt sprint graded stakes and a graded race on the grass going 1 1/16 miles.
He returned to softer competition in the Florida Sire Affirmed Stakes held at seven-eighths of a mile and ran an even third, but stretching out around two turns on the dirt in his next race unlocked something in the Noble Bird colt.
He dominated the 1 1/16-mile FTBOA Florida Sire In Reality Stakes by nine lengths Nov. 29, 2025, at Gulfstream, prompting Casse to give him another shot against open competition in the Smarty Jones Stakes on the Kentucky Derby trail. He aced the class test in a Derby qualifying race at 1 1/16 miles on the dirt.
Strategic Risk utilized his natural speed to race within a couple of lengths of pacesetter Scar Ship in the Smarty Jones before imposing his will on that opponent at the top of the stretch and pulling clear to win by 4 ½ lengths over stablemate Silent Tactic under Javier Castellano. He completed his final quarter-mile in an eye-catching :23.78 and his final eighth of a mile in :11.91, both no doubt aided by a slow pace but impressive nonetheless for a two-turn dirt race for 3-year-olds in January.
“It seemed to me the pace wasn’t too fast. I just enjoyed the ride,” Castellano said. “Turning for home, when I asked him, he just took off. I liked the way he finished. He galloped out beautifully. His stride was strong and steady.”
Speed Figures: Strategic Risk earned a career-best 89 Equibase Speed Figure and new top 87 Beyer Speed Figure. The former was a modest three-point jump but the final number was undoubtedly suppressed by a very slow pace (opening half-mile in :49.72), while the Beyer improvement was a significant eight-point jump. Strategic Risk will need to continue to progress but the fact that he finished so fast is reason for optimism.

Running Style: Strategic Risk has the tactical speed to stalk the pace in most races against 3-year-olds or press the issue if, as we saw in the Smarty Jones, the early tempo is slow. That ability to settle in behind horses and finish powerfully is potent on the Derby trail as well as in a field of 20 in the run for the roses.
Pedigree Notes: Owned by John Oxley, who won the 2001 Kentucky Derby with Monarchos, Strategic Risk is from the fifth crop of 2015 Stephen Foster Handicap winner Noble Bird, by 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone. Oxley owned and Casse trained Noble Bird, whose four stakes wins came at distances from 1 1/8 miles to 1 3/16 miles. Strategic Risk is one of four stakes winners to date from 89 starters for Noble Bird through Jan. 4.
Produced by the Afleet Alex mare Strategize, Strategic Risk is a full brother (same dam and sire) to multiple stakes winner Strategic Bird. Strategic Risk’s grandam (maternal grandmother) is stakes winner Strategy and his third dam (maternal great-grandmother) is multiple Grade 1 winner Educated Risk. This family also produced champions Inside Information and Smuggler.
Derby Potential: It’s no secret if you read this blog regularly that I love 3-year-olds who finish fast on the dirt, based on the assumption that many will be able to handle additional distance as the races get longer. Journalism and Sovereignty were two 3-year-olds in 2025 who showed the ability to settle and finish powerfully.
While Strategic Risk’s speed figures might not inspire a ton of confidence yet and his sire, Noble Bird, is not especially fashionable, I really like what I’ve seen in his last two races when stretching out to route races on the dirt. He also has class and stamina in his pedigree and is in the capable hands of Canadian and U.S. Hall of Famer Casse. I think Strategic Risk has a high likelihood of continuing to improve, enough to be a true player on the 2026 Kentucky Derby trail. He will be pointed to the $1 million Southwest Stakes Jan. 31 at Oaklawn.
