2026 Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles: Santa Anita Derby Winner So Happy
The Sport
Welcome to Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles, where we take a look each week at a recent winner on the Road to the Derby schedule with races that offer qualifying points to the 1 ¼-mile classic May 2, 2026, at Churchill Downs.
We take a closer look this week at So Happy, the 2 ¾-length winner of the $500,000 Santa Anita Derby April 4 at Santa Anita Park. The Runhappy colt ranks fourth on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 115 points and has a spot in the race locked up.
Racing Résumé: So Happy built upon a debut win sprinting in November 2025 at Del Mar with a stakes victory in his 3-year-old bow, pulling clear to prevail by two lengths in the Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes Jan. 10 at Santa Anita Park to ace a significant class test.
Next up was a distance test for So Happy. Trainer Mark Glatt entered him in the 1 1/16-mile, Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes Presented by DK Horse, and the colt made a bid for the lead entering the stretch but faded after pressing the pace. So Happy finished third as the 2.10-1 second betting choice, 2 ¼ lengths behind winner Potente.
So Happy showed significant improvement in his second start navigating two turns in the April 4 Santa Anita Derby. He comfortably stalked a solid pace set by the dueling pair of Robusta and Potente through a half-mile in :46.79 before rallying willingly on cue under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith entering the stretch. He wore down Potente in the final furlong and surged clear.
“I think that was the biggest part of it, having that two-turn race under his belt,” Glatt said. “I thought Mike rode a great race. We were a little more patient with him than last time.”
So Happy raced within a length and a half of a strong half-mile and still finished well with a final three-eighths of a mile in :37.73 and a final quarter-mile in :25.38.
Speed Figures: So Happy improved his Equibase Speed Figure 10 points in his second two-turn race from a 90 in the San Felipe to a 100 in the Santa Anita Derby, equaling his previous best earned in the San Vicente. So Happy earned a career-top 100 Beyer Speed Figure for the Santa Anita Derby and is one of six probable Kentucky Derby runners with a triple-digit Beyer figure.
Running Style: Many of the leading contenders for the 2026 Kentucky Derby prefer to rate off the pace and make one sustained closing bid, but So Happy has the tactical speed to race within a few lengths of the lead and challenge for the front near the top of the stretch. That cruising speed should allow him to gain good early position in a 20-horse Kentucky Derby field and also to potentially avoid traffic trouble and get a head start on some of his key rivals.
Pedigree Notes: People very likely look at So Happy’s pedigree and assume distance limitations based upon his sire, 2015 champion sprinter Runhappy. It’s understandable, but keep in mind Runhappy was a multiple Grade 1 winner at seven-eighths of a mile and sired by 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver out of a Broken Vow mare who won at 1 1/16 miles. There was a reason Runhappy’s connections tried to stretch him out to a mile or longer on multiple occasions and he has several top progeny that excelled at longer distances: Smile Happy and Happy American were graded stakes winners around two turns.
There also are some stamina influences in the bottom half of the pedigree, a family nurtured by Leverett. S. Miller and his wife, Linda, who died in March 2021. So Happy’s fourth dam (maternal great-great grandmother), So Divine, was a gift from Leverett to Linda and she produced three stakes winners and was the grandam of five others, including multiple Grade 1 winner Silver Wagon. So Happy was produced by So Cunning, by 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame, and his grandam (maternal grandmother), So Glitzy, by Gilded Time, was both graded stakes-placed and a winner at 1 1/8 miles.
Derby Potential: So Happy has never run a bad race in his career and he took a big step forward in his second try stretching out around two turns. He earned a triple-digit Beyer Speed Figure that places him among a short list of major contenders.
So Happy did not finish as powerfully as several other top Kentucky Derby prospects, like Arkansas Derby winner Renegade or Curlin Florida Derby Presented by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa winner Commandment and runner-up The Puma, but he does have the tactical speed that trio lacks and should be positioned to challenge for the lead entering the Churchill Downs stretch. Closers have won the Kentucky Derby in each of the last four editions, but prior to that tactical speed had been potent for eight years in a row. So Happy could be tough to catch if he gets a Hall of Fame ride from Smith, 60. I think he’s improving and has a big shot to finish in the top three with even a small step forward.
