Welcome to Kentucky Derby Prospect Profiles, where we take a look each week at a recent winner of a race the Road to the Derby schedule which offers qualifying points to the 1 ¼-mile classic race May 2, 2026, at Churchill Downs.

We take a closer look this week at Class President, the $1 million Rebel Stakes winner March 1 at Oaklawn Park. He banked 50 points for the win and rose to third on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard as one of four 3-year-olds with 50 qualifying points total. In the event of a tie, the leaderboard is determined on the basis of non-restricted stakes earnings.

Racing Résumé: The Todd Pletcher barn lost an elite Kentucky Derby prospect when 2025 champion 2-year-old male Ted Noffey was sidelined with bone bruising. But in the weeks since, Nearly stepped up to win the Holy Bull Stakes Jan. 31 at Gulfstream Park, Renegade won the Sam F. Davis Stakes Feb. 7 at Tampa Bay Downs, and most recently Class President prevailed in the Rebel Stakes. Talk about a robust bench (if you can even call it that) for Pletcher!

I’ve already profiled both Nearly and Renegade – both look like legitimate Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve win candidates – and Class President showed serious guts in deep stretch to fend off the late charge of Southwest Stakes winner Silent Tactic to win by a nose. Indeed, Silent Tactic passed Class President in deep stretch, but the winner dug in determinedly in the final sixteenth of a mile to eke out a gritty victory. He completed his final furlong in a sparkling :12.35 according to the Equibase GPS chart in his first start around two turns. Class President’s Rebel win was impressive on multiple levels: passed a stamina test, outfinished a quality opponent, battled bravely in the closing strides, and finished fast.

“When we came down the stretch and the other horse passed him, he responded,” winning jockey John Velazquez said.

Prior to the Rebel, Class President won his career debut by 3 ¼ lengths in a one-turn mile Dec. 27 at Gulfstream Park and finished second in the seven-furlong Swale Stakes to Solitude Dude, who subsequently was third in the Feb. 28 Coolmore Fountain of Youth Stakes.

Speed Figures: Class President has improved both his Equibase Speed Figures (84-88-89) and Beyer Speed Figures (79-88-91) in every start, so he’s trending up, but I’m surprised the Rebel figures were not stronger. I’m not a speed figure maker nor to I pretend to be, but Class President was only a head behind a strong opening quarter-mile in :23.06 and still finished very fast. My guess is Explora’s Honeybee Stakes win at 1 1/16 miles two races earlier and the Rebel both will wind up being better races than the speed figures indicate.

Running Style: Class President has a high cruising speed that allowed him to gain good tactical position from an inside post in the Rebel before he settled in to a stalking spot, as he had done in his first two races. He is mature and responsive for a colt with only three starts. That should help him in the big 3-year-old races.

Pedigree Notes: Class President was sired by 2010 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner and champion 2-year-old male Uncle Mo, a brilliantly fast runner who could carry that speed around two turns.

Uncle Mo, who died in 2024 at age 16, was a versatile sire whose progeny include 2016 Kentucky Derby winner and sire Nyquist; 2022 Belmont Stakes winner Mo Donegal; elite turf sprinter Golden Pal; and Adare Manor, a multiple Grade 1 winner in dirt route races.

Class President’s dam (mother), Top Quality, by Quality Road, was a multiple stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles and graded stakes-placed at 1 1/8 miles. This colt should be able to handle 1 1/8 miles and has a chance to extend that to 1 ¼ miles.

Derby Potential: My biggest concern with Class President is foundation. He’s only made three career starts and one around two turns. If Pletcher bypasses a final prep race in favor of training Class President up to the Kentucky Derby, he seems to be a mentally strong racehorse but I would be skeptical about his chances to excel at 1 ¼ miles with that little experience to build stamina.

I loved the way he used his speed tactically in the Rebel, responded on cue to John Velazquez, rose up to the challenge of a proven stakes winner in Silent Tactic, and finished powerfully.

I’m a fan of Class President, but I’d prefer to see another prep race before the Kentucky Derby to build stamina for the first jewel of the Triple Crown. We’ll see what Pletcher and the owners decide in the coming weeks.
