We take a closer look this week at Emerging Market, winner of the $1 million Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby March 21 at Fair Grounds to bank 100 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard and punch his ticket to the first jewel of the Triple Crown.

Racing Résumé: Emerging Market was the 2-1 favorite for the Louisiana Derby despite racing only once previously, posting a three-quarter-length victory in a one mile and 40-yard maiden special weight race Feb. 7 at Tampa Bay Downs. The Tampa win earned a big Beyer Speed Figure and surely the top-tier trainer-jockey tandem of Chad Brown and Flavien Prat also suppressed his odds March 21 at Fair Grounds.

Stretching out to 1 3/16 miles in his second career race while making the jump from a maiden race to a Grade 2 stakes on the Kentucky Derby trail with a seven-figure purse was a monumental test for Emerging Market, but he proved up to the challenge.

The chestnut Candy Ride colt stalked the pace from within 3 ½ lengths through a strong half-mile in :46.23 and moved up under Prat to challenge pacesetter Pavlovian with a sweeping rally entering the long Fair Grounds stretch.

Emerging Market took the lead near the three-sixteenths pole, but Pavlovian fought back and pushed his head in front near the eighth pole before Emerging Market wore him down in the closing strides to win by a head.

Emerging Market completed his final quarter-mile in :24.82 and the final eighth of a mile in :12.51 – terrific closing fractions for a 3-year-old in his second career race.

Owner Seth Klarman of Klaravich Stables and Brown previously have taken a conservative approach with lightly raced 3-year-olds Cloud Computing and Early Voting, who both had made three starts before bypassing the Derby and winning the Preakness Stakes in 2017 and 2022, respectively. Brown told BloodHorse after the Louisiana Derby that Emerging Market will be considered for the first jewel of the Triple Crown.

Speed Figures: Emerging Market is a prime example of how different speed-figure makers can vary widely in their evaluation of a race or set of races. Emerging Market had highest lifetime speed figure in the Louisiana Derby field for his debut win according to Beyer (97) and Brisnet (99) Speed Figures, while his 79 Equibase Speed Figure was the lowest top figure of the nine entrants. He earned a 90 Beyer Speed Figure for the Louisiana Derby and an 89 Equibase Speed Figure (Brisnet has yet to release a rating).

Running Style: Emerging Market has enough tactical speed to place himself in good striking position, but he profiles as an off-the-pace runner who will need to navigate some traffic in the 20-horse Kentucky Derby field should his connections enter him in the race.

Pedigree Notes: Emerging Market is by undefeated Argentina-bred star Candy Ride, who set a 1 ¼-mile track record at Del Mar when winning the 2003 Pacific Classic in 1:59.11 and has become an influential sire. Candy Ride’s top runners include Hall of Famer Gun Runner, champions Shared Belief and Game Winner, and 2025 Dubai World Cup winner Hit Show among 131 stakes winners through March 22.

Emerging Market’s dam (mother) is Wild Empress, by 2003 Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker. Wild Empress is a half-sister (same dam, different sire) to 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and champion 2-year-old filly She Be Wild.

Derby Potential: Based on how he finished in the Louisiana Derby and a quality stamina pedigree, Emerging Market should be able to excel at 1 ¼ miles. His connections (owner-trainer-jockey) are top-notch and he has natural talent plus plenty of determination, which he showed in deep stretch against Pavlovian in the Louisiana Derby.

For decades, racing fans and analysts brought up the Curse of Apollo – no horse had won the Kentucky Derby without racing as a 2-year-old since Apollo in 1882 – but Justify in 2018 and Mage in 2023 dispelled that curse.

Still, there was a reason the curse existed. It’s tough for a 3-year-old to defeat 19 opponents in front of 100,000-plus fans while racing 1 ¼ miles for the first time with limited foundation and experience. Emerging Market would be bidding become the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby with two or fewer starts. Seven others have tried with T O Password’s fifth-place finish in 2024 the best result. Emerging Market looks like an exciting prospect; he would need to be exceptional to win the Kentucky Derby in his third start.
